    Hey all,

I am about to launch my French website but I am wondering if it matters whether I pick a USA host or a FR host for my .fr domain since I target France.

    All input is welcome :)

    No, it doesn't.
But it may affect site speed which affects SEO. So make sure the server is good.

I once move my website to an UK server but just due to loading speed performance , I didn't see serious improvements in rankings.

Unless someone works at google, nobody really knows. But yes, the hosting provider will effect site ping and loading speed, which can effect your ranking.

I would recommend at least picking a host in the country of your target audience.

I don't think it matters. A Lot of big guys use amazon cdn, cloudflare etc..

No it doesnt matter. Your main concern must be a CDN. Its cheap and help SEO a looooooot.

This is actually wrong. If you have right hosting setup, in premium location let's say in USA (not server in the woods, but premium high quality network and properly set server) it can be 10x better and faster then even cheap dedicated server in EU. It's simple. Let's say between Europe and US, I believe it should be about 200ms ping delay, it's faster in EU if server is let's say in France. Great. We have 200ms advantage over EU. But what about server speed? If it takes 8 seconds for server to load heavy page those 200ms fall right into the water and make absolutely no sense compared to server in US.

Not really, just use CDN like cloudflare and you'll do great!

Haha it's wrong if you take me completely out of context. He made no mention of the hosting type or about comparing expensive US hosing to cheap hosting in France. Obviously it's different if you have different hosting quality. My recommendation was based on if you have the same basic hosing in both countries, obviously you would want hosting in the target country.

That's a common myth. If you have a site targeting visitors in many different locations worldwide, far away from each other, e.g. US/UK/CA/ZA/IN a good CDN (wouldn't personally recommend Cloudflare) can make sense. If you are only targeting visitors in one country or a few countries close to each other (e.g. DE/AT/CH/LI ), a CDN will do more harm than good compared to a server with a low ping.

As far as I know, getting local hosting will help you in terms of SEO in ranking for searches that happen from the country your hosting is from - in your case, France.

The reason Google will give preference to your site over a different site is because every site has an IP, and if you host your site on a French hosting, you will get a French IP, and that's why Google will rank your site higher when people from France search stuff on Google related to what your site is about.

That said, if you are targeting a specific country, probably having the site in that country's language should also be helpful (though I'd just go for French and English version, and redirect people based on IP or something).

From experience won't make much difference at all but...

One advantage I see going with local is time difference. If something were to go wrong, I can contact support during working hours.
Another advantage I see going local is depending on what kind credit card you use to pay, you won't have to pay foreign transaction fees.

I would be more concerned with the site speed than the location. With that being said, I still choose the location closest to the area I'm targeting if the quality of the hosting is the same. This has more to do with improving the load times for visitors than SEO though, if only slightly.

Also, it doesn't hurt to choose the country in GWT for the site.

It depends on your target market and type of website you are focusing on .

Yea, and what do these CDN's have in common?
They cache and serve the content from the data center closest to the visitor location.

So yea, site speed matters which means that the closer the hosting location is to the visitor, the better.
