Does hiding paid links with a redirect really work?

    I often see the explanation for sites with very few back links being that there are some paid links to a 301 redirect that goes to the high ranking page.

    Has anyone every tried this to see is if it actually hides paid links from easily being discovered?

    I imagine this would be very easy for Google to detect.

    I believe the OP meant to say hiding links from competitors.

    Yes I do not want my competition finding my paid links and ratting me out.
