I'm in the process of copying the themes of a couple very popular sites and a quick search google yields that there is a pretty high level want for them. I don't feel right selling something like that so I am thinking of adding a donation button on the site but I'm not sure if it'll work at all.

Do any of you do this at all and have you gotten any donations for your time & effort?

As long as there are no legality issues, you should be fine. But if you are ripping sites without permission/authority, you might get into trouble. There is a good chance that they will do a Cease and Desist on you at the very least.

agreed. if you're breaching copyright then the fact that you're not doing it 'for profit' per se will not help you....

well the themes are free themes that have been tweaked just a little. I'm changing them a little but for the most part they will have the same structure/feel

I'm definitely not going to sell them since a. it's wrong and b. I don't care to really profit from them. A donation or two every now and then I wouldn't mind though.

If you are using your own graphics (headers & footers) and changing the layout a bit, you will probably get by okay.

When I get them done I plan to release them here. I'll just wait and see if any one says anything in that thread

I have a few sites that get donations. Generally donations don't do well unless you have an absolute target for potential donors to see. Widgets like chipin.com allow you to set a target amount and target date - most sites say it is to pay their hosting or whatever. If you are providing free content you might get a few bites :)

Answer your own question: have YOU ever donated to any website?
I never have, and don't think I will ever do

People USUALLY only donate to website's they feel strongly about. Example of that are all the Linux developer or open-source software nerds. Someone should seriously work on spamming SourceForge.net. They'd make a heck of a lot of money.
