I'm looking to develop an old site that has a thousands of backlinks incoming with the same wordpress theme anchor. It used to give out a free theme people use.

It has high DA, but is there any point trying to rank it with such backlink profile?

    Home Page:
Write a nice long seo optimized article about that keyword with images and everything, add it to the homepage, give it some time until it gets indexed and see if it's ranking, to find out if it was penalized or not.

You can get a penalty from these. I have gotten them from sponsored themes i have purchased with repetitive footers anchors on 1000s of pages (these penalties only effective the keyword/pages in question, not the whole domain), but it took a long time to get the penalty, and if all these themes have the exact same (keyword rich anchor) there is definitely a chance a penalty will come at some point if you dont either dilute or disavowal them. In the mean time you should use the power of those links if they are there. I think what ATY suggest is the best option and what i would do. Don't put a lot of effort into building a good site until you see if its already got issues. Test the rankings out of the box and if they do well then you can put more time/effort/money into developing for it. If it is not on the radar at all them its probably got issues.
