Does Google Places ranking effect your normal Google ranking? VERY strange...

I have a term I've been ranking... it got as high as 12. Then one day I noticed Google Places rankings showing up on the first page. Shortly after my ranking dropped from 12 to 75, but I noticed that I was now featured on the first page as the 2nd feature on the Google Places, essentially making my link show up #3 overall.

So did Google Places adding me into their 1st page cause my non-Google-Places ranking to drop? Is that how it works... that they don't let you rank 1st page in both Places and normal without dropping one?

    Thanks

Google has been playing around with how they rank and show places listings. Many listings are now hybrid listings of places and your website. Your website rankings are becoming an important part of your places rankings now.

Yeah, that is a bit strange b/c as far I know, your organic ranking for your site is closely correlated to where you will appear in google places.

But my website rankings were about to go top 10, and now that I'm in the top of Google Places my website is like 75 but I'm dominating Google Places. So you're saying that Google chose me to be in Google Places because that top 10 website ranking and then moved my website down since Google Places was already featuring me on page 1? Or is this wrong?

This Google Places stuff is weird.

Could be... though it's been gone about 2 weeks, the same amount of time that Google Places has been ranking me 1st page. Either way I'm not sweating it, I've got top exposure still. I was just wondering if this was standard Google practice to knock a term's normal ranking down if it's Google Places is showing 1st page. Would be GREAT if it came back and I had both though lol.
