If I have a site and I sell an ad to someone, will Google penalize my site for that if they know?

No. If that was true then every site with a banner would have been penalized. Just make sure that you make the link nofollow.

No - Not that Google aren't hypocrits (they are) but that until recently was 100% of the way they earned money themselves.
The only issue is who you sell it to and where it is on the page.
This is SEO however and not a "advertising slap"
Too many outbound commercial links high on the page is bad onsite SEO even if you are using adsense.
Likewise too many OBL's on page is not good either.
Links to shit or irreleveant sites are not good.

    Other than that. Sell away.

Scritty is right. Google places nothing but ads above the fold but penalizes those sites that have too high of a percentage.

Are Google's policies hypocritical? Yes. Are those that design Google's policies assholes? Absolutely.

Buying ad space is fine according to Google, but trying to buy links is bad to Google because by doing so you are trying to manipulate Google's search engine
