    Hey guys

so lets say i have a website selling specific products in a certain niche, and then i start posting some articles on off topic stuff, not many but lets say 1 off topic article for every 10 on topic articles. All these are new pages, and nothing off topic is posted on the home page....

Does google care about this? or as long as the articles are helpful they rank as good as the ones from on topic website.

    thanks in advance

Google doesn't care, but visitors to your website might be very confused.

Yeah i am expecting the ctr to be low as it would appear as
    Randomproduct.com/off-topic-article

Other then that i dont think it would matter, what do you think?

But the domain name is really short, 6 characters but it has a latest TLD .deals one. Maybe i can make up for it by adding really good title

I've killed one od my powerful niche sites few years ago by posting completely irrelevant articles (I've used my site) sort of as parasite and it was ranking almost over night :D but yet I was very agressive and very offtopic and I've killed it.

I'm not saying it will happen the same, just find connection and relate to main topic of your site.

Curious, how did you kill it? What was the reason for penalty? Did google specify it was off topic content? Were you giving do follow link to other sites from your off topic articles?

I have only posted 3 off topic articles out of 100 on topic articles so far and i do not plan to post more off topic stuff.

Well, I was curious to test as I was letting that site go at a time (was not profitable, however I've learned lot of that project). So I've built pretty much nichesite.com/anytopic-aff-random.html and blasting it with links. In matter of days/hours it was ranked. For about month/two and that was it. That's pretty much what sometimes spammers who hack into someones site do to some sites using them exactly like that, it's just I've used it on my own. So that's what killed it for sure. I've overdone it.

However I do not think that anything irrelevant should hurt your site and/or rankings, especially if you are not linking or blasting/spamming as I did.

I used to see this all the time many years ago, but don't seem to see it now. I'd guess there is a reason why nobody does this anymore.

This is usually done to stuff a site with contents, to avoid panda. Posting off topic doesn't hurt, if it did then general topic sites like Huffpo would never rank.

Google will keep indexing you all the same - it's the visitor experience that will suffer..

You always need a "bridge" to take people from 1 niche/idea to another..

Yes, it hurts and Huffpo is such a bad example, because that site is so authoritative they could literally put up a gibberish or blank page and still rank.
@OP: It's very simple. If you've got a site like Huffpo or Wikipedia, do it. Any huge authority website with a lot of "backlinking" firepower can get away with any kind of content. Otherwise don't, especially if you've got a site focused around a certain niche. It won't do you any good and will hurt you in the long run.
