so I want to promote a nich, but does the domain name really matter when google is ranking your site? So could I make it really catchy, but my keywords be different than my domain name. Can I still get it to the top page of google?

Keywords in your domain name absolutely matter, but yes you can get to page 1 with non keyword domains, just do a search for something popular like "hairloss" on google and you'll see that only half of the page 1 results have the keywords hairloss in the domains.

So you're next question will probably be "well how much does having the keyword in the domain matter?"

Gewgle's metrics and algorithms are not openly known, but you can probably equate a keyword rich domain to drinking a Redbull before running a race. It may not make you a winner, but it sure as hell gives you a kick off the starting line. :)

Alright thank you, so is it possible to be on the top page of google for multiple keywords then? Also would you take a domain name with the keyword in it if it is long and seems kinda iffy or rather make a domain name that is catchy, but your main keywords are not in it?

yes it matters in multiple ways. keywords is one but another is the name itself. If its unique, easy to remember, or stands out in some way, then users are likely to remember it more. I have one domain that I dont promote as much as others but I notice it is getting to be very popular. I like its name better than the others and I have a feeling its sticking in peoples minds.

There's two things going on here...do you want to be remembered...or do you want to be FOUND? (on Google) I don't print business cards...I make money by being FOUND on Google - for a keyword.

If the niche is small enough you can rank on Google on the first page WITH NO BACKLINKS by just the keyword domain name alone.

If you're fighting a herd of marketers for a keyword, then backlinks will be the main reason why your on the first page.

:) Thank you short and sweet :P

i would say it does not matter.

do you think "digg" and "youtube" have keywords in them?

how about wwtdd its an acronym for what would tyler durden do and it is a celebrity blog.

i say it has nothign to do with it. it is more about what your content is.

keyword in domains name isnt essential but it is very important. I have a site in a very hard niche to rank for that is on its way to page one without keyword in domain
