does disavow bad links increase ranking? Or is this only to prevent google penalty?
Your ranking will increase when you remove bad links. However, this is not automatic. some people reported no significant changes, still it safes one from Google penalty
There is no assurance by disavowing the bad links will increase the ranking, but it will protect your site from a penalty during google update.
If the links are effect you means you disavow links and update unique fresh content.
No one can guarantee it, and in some cases rankings may even tank so be careful before using that button
Some people even claim it's hurt their rankings, so use it only when necessary
Disavowing those links will make site safe and gives a good user experience. If it affects ranking or you find any abnormal activity then disavow it.
Let's say that you were spam linked from some chinese sites by your competitor, you might want to disavow those links as they may hurt your ranking.
On the other hand you always should think twice before removing links that you are not sure are bad, as it may also hurt your rank.
I found it to be BS.
I disavowed some backlinks that i had on my expired domain (they were 100% not related to the niche or whatever my site is about) and guess what? For 2 weeks i lost most of my traffic. So yeah, lesson learned the next time i will ever use disavow will be when i will get spammy backlinks(related to porn and such).
You should disavow only after you've received a penalty or if you have some clear trash links. Otherwise blindly disavowing links you don't like can just hurt your rankings.
Just disavow the link and update with unique and fresh content
Think twice before disavow any link, you don't know which link was valued by google. If it is complete spam and the source is totally non relevant then ok.
It may or may not. But its better to keep spam links disavowed.
