Does comcast keep a file of user's visited websites?

Hey yall, I had a question about comcast, do they keep a log of a user' websites, visited ones? And what about IM conversations?

Things like that are sometimes cached on a server, but keeping all that info, by user, would take a huge amount of space. I can see them keeping a log of sites visited, in mass, but not by user. The IMs are should be protected communications and not legally kept, and the sites could be also, but, they could also fall under the same thing like a telephone bill, which lists the numbers.
Still, think of the shear volume of data to be stored, even compressed.

It smells of urban legend to me.

Charlie I know what you're talking about, don't worry. I also use Comcast and I know how to use proxies like the best of them from socks to regular http proxies and I've used them for years. Don't worry. ISPs aren't the one's that sue you it's the content providers and it takes court orders and costs lots of money to do it. Relax a bit. Proxies are good but Comcast is actually a solid ISP when it comes to privacy. I'm fighting with Comcast now because of the insane price increase I got. I've been paying $120 a month and all of a sudden I'm paying $160 a month. They're assholes that have specials that you have to renew every few months to keep it that way. They wait until you're addicted to the fights on HBO and Shotime to jack up the price. There's always DirectTV which is like half price.

dont worry man, ive been there PLENTY of times. Chances are (unless its stealing money), the people won't report it. If they do, chances are the govt won't do anything since they get thousands of reports each day (again, unless its stealing money - then they care). Finally, ISP's DO log data, but only for a certain period of time (im guessing a month tops) because otherwise they would need billions and trillions of gigabytes. (I did read about a bill the senate tried to pass making it mandatory for ISP's to log data for atleast to 2 years - not sure if it got passed though). I've also read that ISP's can only log the last 10 IP's of a user, so if you change your IP like 11 times you may be safe (not sure if thats totally valid, but hell, give it a shot!)

finally, to clear some things up from vze2yqtm's post, if i'm interpreting you right you're saying using proxies will evade logging. Thats 100% false, they still see the web requests you send because its sent to them first, then the proxy. Unless you use an encrypted VPN or anything else encrypted like Tor, your ISP's will still have logs. It will make it harder to catch you, but if the govt deems it necesary you will be caught, they just demand information from each proxy until they reach the source IP. Usually by then your info is gone from the ISP anyway, so its a real pain in the balls for the feds to even catch you...

He imed me worried to death because he saw one of those auto "we recorded your ip address and will report you to your isp, because you're stealing from our kids mouths and my grandma needs new depends" responses.

Will someone else tell him it's cool... I don't think he believes me when I tell him not to worry.
