i want to redirect people from linking directly to /1.html /2.html site wide
not redirect from /oldpage.html to /newpage.html

i want all incoming links to force the index page to be viewed.

I don't know much PHP but you could make an script that check the referrer and then redirect them to the index.

    Redirect 301 / yourdomainhere

If you were working off the index only that would redirect everything that hit your domain to your index page, I think!

    try

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain\.com$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php [L]
