I added a new ad block to my post page, just below the image. My ctr jumped to 0.70% - 0.80%. This may sound shit to you guys but consider that throughout the year my ctr is normally 0.15 - 0.25%. So I thought I struck gold!

This however only seems to have lasted 2 weeks. The week just gone is showing a 0.40%. Still better than it was but its gone way down even though the traffic and quality of the traffic (all seo traffic) has stayed the same.

Has anyone else seen this? any reason for it? does google not like the sudden increase in ctr maybe?

Does Google shave? Maybe, who knows? There is no way for you to know this.

However the change in CTR probably is more of a result of the additional ad block, as well as a change in pool of advertisers.

Only when its beard grows too long; Adsense likes to have a clean face.

Adsense recently changed the look of text ads. You will notice the arrow button is now a different color (for me it's grey but likely depends on style settings).

This. Or it might be related to the advertisers and the ads that are showing on your blog. I don't think there's any real way to show if google shaves.

Adsense will show sometimes high quality ads to your website, and sometimes low quality, it all depends how many blocks you added in your website. If you added more blocks, you have more space of advertising, so they show low quality ads as well.

So just add one block and see the conversion once.

I dont think they shave, but if your site isn't performing well, they will divert the adverts elsewhere - I understand that the bidding system works to that effect and google monitor everything in real time and adjust everything based on the stats returned.

So it may be that people were clicking on the ads but then bouncing straight away, so google probably changed the ads that were displaying on your site..??

I think the previous posters have covered the options here and one of them is likely correct. It could be the change in look, different advertisers that are not converting as well or something else.

I am not ruling it out but I would be surprised if they are shaving.
