Lets say you have a site that has had the dreaded "overoptimised keywords" penalty from Google. I know if you 301 this domain to a new domain, the penalty will also pass. BUT, if you 301 the penalised domain to an existing, aged domain, (which already has lots of good backlinks), am I right in assuming this shouldn't harm the aged site? Rather, it may actually help?

ummm there is no "overoptimised keyword" penalty. There is thin content and pure spam, which basically means your site sucks and it's not even worth the electrons to bother with it.

    backlink penalties pass.

Actually, I have had a site in the past which was penalised for this very reason, i.e. too many similar keywords/anchors. Then uploaded a disavow file and got the penalty removed. Maybe there's no such thing as a disavow links feature either...

Anyway, can someone who knows something about SEO respond to my initial post please?

    .

I think it will depend on the backlink anchors, rather than the backlink quality?

If the new domain has the same/similar anchors then there?s a good chance that it might be harmed

Otherwise I don?t think there will be a problem

It does not pass the penalty, tried and tested this with 10 domains during the last 6 months. No penalty is passed. If a penalty would be passed, it would be easy to do negative seo - just buy an expired domain name with a really bad link profile (just $10) and point it to your competitor.

Folks started redirecting penalized domains to their competitors. So essentially, today the penalty will only pass if Google is able to determine that you own both domains.

That was your own explanation. That's not the explanation you got from google.

Can that be the same reason/explanation why a 301 sometimes work, and sometimes not?

This question has been asked and answered at least 50 times, is it so hard for you to use the freaking search?

It does not matter that your site is redirecting to an existing, aged domain, (which already has lots of good backlinks). penalty wll pass to new domain too.

In that case why don't you try redirecting a spammy penalised site to eBay. Let me know when you've taken down the world's largest auction site.
