This is a interesting video I came across.
I myself hold a college degree in electrical engineering.
Luckily I am not from the US and my education has been payed almost in whole by my government.
I say luckily because I learned nothing from being in college. I hardly ever studied for tests and I passed all my classes easily. When I got a job that required my new learned skill I realized I learned jack shit in college. It is the fact that my hobby was creating and designing all sorts of electrical circuits and PCB's that I really learned the trade of electrical engineering. From the internet and actually doing stuff.
    Anyway watch the video:

Disclaimer: Take this at face value and make up your own mind, as with anything, this video is propaganda (not a bad word) too. Use your common sense to form your educated opinion.

It's a pretty damn bias video. There's some good points both ways but I think you're preaching to the converted. Most people on BHW probably have some kind of entrepreneurial streak and doesn't want to be part of 'the machine'

Besides, think of all those college educated consumers wanting to buy our shit :)

I am 23 and just finished college education last year and am also realizing the same thing.I learnt a lot more stuff in last 9 months by searching stuff in google lol.

Sometimes i wish i knew about all these things when i was in college...just wasting time and getting through with a degree.

Having said that i wouldnt recommend people to not to go to college/drop college.
College is like preliminary stage before you enter the real world full of all sorts of people scammers, people without morals, liars, backstabbers, cheaters and all.In college you will get to know the glimpse of characters of people. It teachesyou more than wstuff from books!

I would say go to college, enjoy life .use your free time to learn skills which you are passionate about i.e web designing, programming ,seo or whatever you like

I'm going to Manchester to study Advertising in september. I dont need a degree and I definately dont want to ever be an employee. The thing is, until I'm 21 I dont see any reason to move to the states (as ive just hit legal age for everything in UK) and I see a degree as a way to spend 3 years productively with tax payers money while at the same time turning my current online income passive. The plan is to leave uni on £5k ($8-9k) a month passive so I can focus on building/opening my eco headshop in Cali.

All I can say is this:
Follow and learn something that will benefit you in future. Also make sure it's something you like.

i advice not to go even school (in India), then what the heck College is !!!!
The good thing about College is having fun with friends and participating into different activities. A college degree can be useful for a job.

I'm not defending college, but in the US, unless you are VERY smart, an electrical engineering degree is very challenging.

Yes I agree. I forgot that a college in the US in not the same as a college in EU.
I believe in the US you leave a college with a BA no? I didn't get my BA although my degree is a 4 year degree. I have no clue to what level of education it compares to in the US

College was a waste of money from a professional standpoint but was worth it from a personal growth standpoint I think.

I would have to agree, you can be average in the intelligence department but be strongly motivated and succeed in EE at a high quality us university.

Yes I'm making a stab at myself.

And Yes the EE degree was worth it.

Most people I know that went to college aren't employed in a field related to their studies. They're working the same boring lame jobs as those that didn't go, or rather they're being managed by those people but they also got a whack of debt to pay off. Unless you are really into a subject that has a good earning potential don't waste cash on school.. On the otherhand if your govt pays it then what the hell go for it

I quite literally just finished watching this video before I logged onto BHW... To be honest although they certainly do over hype some things, the fact is that the cost of a college education in the USA is way more than it used to be, and unless you're getting a government job the price is more than you will reliably be able to make back...

In the end I think you can make more through self education, like here at BHW than you can through formal education after high school... Although I think home schooling will teach you more than high school these days also...

But this is what happens when government no longer cares about things like constitutions, and just does what it wants... And the populous simply does nothing to stop them...

LOL, personally I hold three advanced degrees. I learned many things in college that I would not have been able to learn otherwise.

College is a very good thing, if you go for the right degree. My degrees allowed me to make enough money to pay off my student loans in less than three years, at a yearly salary of $165,000/year.

And I've only been out of college for 5 years now. Self education is fine, but when you go for executive positions and such, no one will hire you without one.

If you plan on pumping gas for the rest of your life, or are going into web/computer stuff, fine don't get a degree. You'll be fine.

But if you want to do something other than minimum wage jobs, or technology, you won't get anywhere without that piece of paper.

According to a 2002 US census data report only 23 percent of business owners that had employees had a bachelor's degree; and 17 percent had a graduate degree. That means that a large majority of owners, you know the guy, many call him the boss, the one that often hires people with degrees, had no formal degree in hand. And of all business owners both those with and without employees only 20 percent have over a bachelor's degree.

So, while I agree that getting educated in the right areas is correct I absolutely disagree with the assertion that:

Success in America is more often than not, not bestowed upon anyone by someone else (a boss), but is instead worked for, earned, and created from within the person themselves, they become the boss of others. I think here at BWH we call it outsourcing...

I have a 4 year college degree.... in Molecular Genetics...

College is very well worth it...

it teaches you ONE main thing....

It teaches you how to attack a huge project and NOT get overwhelmed by it.

that in itself is pure gold....

The smartest thing you can do with your business is to HIRE someone that is smarter than you....
bosses with no degree quickly realize that so they hire people with degrees....

and yes... most multi million dollar companies will not even look at you if you do not have a degree.....

yes... there have been people that make millions without a degree... but for everyone of those....there are 100s that made millions because they had a degree....

Yeah good luck impressing a HR Manager of a worthy company without a degree. My kids are so going to college... and why not, it's been nothing but fun for me so far. And having fun costs money. Going to know future lawyers, doctors, executives too. I don't understand the basic expectation that college = job later. It's not that. It's an interesting environment and experience. No professor really cares whether I get a job or not, it is up to me what I do with the degree (if anything at all).

It is kind of unfair that the whole thing gets hyped up with empty promisses and drags boring people into debt, who blindly believe the degree will make the world bow before them.
