The internet was a place for nerds and hipsters when it first came out. Now look at it :)
I think voice search does have utility for basic informational questions where typing it out on your smartphone takes too long or when you are multitasking. I can't see it being used for everything, however.

Maybe one day when man and machine are combined, we can search for things by just thinking about it :suspicious:

Smart answers is the next big thing. Whenever I do voice search, it gives me a standard Google search answer, or misses the point of what I am asking. Once it understands what I really need, it's going to change the whole search experience.

People will start conversing with these entities all day that literally know everything there is to know when it comes to accessible information. We'll acquire this information while lying on the couch.

Can't be so sure in Google search, but voice messages are. There are too many people that don't type messages but send the voice ones. It really annoys as when they receive the answer they start to look for their headphones to listen to the message. And it totally destroys the real communication. As for the Google search I also hadn't seen much people that use it.

It is estimated that more than 50% of the searches will be voice-based in 2020. So it's better to optimize your website for voice search if you want to gain more traffic and customers.

Your third poll option made me laugh.

No, I don't. Not in any useful way for marketers.

I think voice usage will continue but for basic questions requiring basic answers. Nobody is going to follow a CTA on something like that. Look at podcast response rates and that's someone who's willing to listen to you for an hour.

There might be an opening for apps/skills for Alexa or Google Home (that's what it's called, right?) but I don't see most marketers getting anything from someone asking an Alexa a general question.

I think it might be good in some fields, but not sure how it will fare for searches. It might take time for the technology to discern accents, intention, etc... the prevalence of smart devices is a good step though.

In the last few years, voice search has quietly taken a big chunk of the search market.

Many of the marketers and Search Engine Optimisation specialists are only really waking up to the fact that by 2020.

yes, the experts says that by the end of the year 2020, half of all searches across the Internet will be voice searches.

I don't believe it to be something revolutionary. Yes, it seems convenient (and fancy) at times. But typing isn't going anywhere.

Then again, they said the same about Gutenberg's printing press!
Who's writing books with ink now? :p

It most probably will be a big thing in the future. I wrote a pretty long study about that topic some years ago and even created a voice application myself that allowed to apply for jobs through voice.
Most of the experts, google, apple and amazon believe in it. If somethings convenient, it will be accepted by the masses.

But you will probably see it breakthrough first in smart home systems and cars. Smartphone adoption is a bit critical yet (you don´t want to sit in a restaurant/subway/classroom and talk to your phone), but it will come for sure.
