From my experience, sandbox is lack of trust and time.
Many times simply waiting does the trick. I see it with PBN units all the time.
You can also build some trustworthy links or social presence to get the trust going and potentiality reduce the sandbox.

Age is not a huge signal but rank history matters more. The only reason to buy the domain is for possible referring domains and especially if the content of the website matches your niche. Allow the website time to rank even a lower position then start working on the signals like link building, content, and user behaviour.

Expired domain is good if it's relevant to your niche and you can do some strong backlinks to gain it's authority and trust which will help sandbox to consider the site soon.

Usually, the expired domains will take some time to appear in Google. It also depends on the domain history, backlink profile of the domain, and relevancy.
You can target more long tail keywords and publish more quality articles with proper internal linking. Build links from relevant quality websites and see.

Use tools like Ahrefs to check the domain’s history did it had any major issues.
May be if the site has penalized by google for spammy practices it will take longer to rank again.
