Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what bhw community thinks about this. I agree that health is the most important thing, but does money ultimately make you happy? I guess I'm asking this question because, right now I feel like I'm in a tight spot. I finally have the financial freedom I want, and I am proud of my acomplishments so far, but still I feel kinda empty inside. I guess I need to surround myself with better people, but it's kinda hard. Having money at a relatively young age, it makes it hard to have true friends or healthy relationships, especially if you live in a 3rd world country where everyone is trying to get by. Just some random thoughts, looking forward to hear your opinions.

    do you have no ambitions?
like, wanting to make a better world, with erasing poverty, giving better life to poor children with little to no sanitation access in africa, or even rural areas in your country.
there is just so many cause that you can support even anonimously.

or investing in a startup company?
of course money can't buy you happiness directly...but even buying ferrari and driving it yourself feels better than rent a used car with bad transmissions...

It's not all that matters - to me it's taking care of my family and in order to do so I need money. I want to be able to provide and live comfortably without having to worry about bills or paying for stuff my family wants. Helping others provides peace like no other :)

The short answer is no. The 'good feeling' kyuahikaru mentioned is very short lived. That's why people try to fill the emptiness you're talking about with more and more things, but they soon feel the same way again.

Being very poor is stressful because you worry if you'll have enough to survive. But being very rich is also stressful because you worry you'll lose it all.

So what does fill that void? I haven't found it for myself. I know some people who have found it in the cause(s) they work at. I know other people who have found it in their religion or personal relationship with their god. I know still others who have found it in their family and closest friends. And there are others who have found that inner peace within themselves.

I think ultimately it comes down to finding contentment with who you are, where you are, and what your doing right now. Instead of living life hoping that if you achieve this or that, then you'll be happy.

No. But in my life, it's pretty important. Like, really important. Because of money, me, my girlfriend, my family are living a better life. Of course, making mad stacks makes you really happy and you can afford to buy a few cool things. :)

Even though, it sounds really bad, yes, money is the ultimate goal. In the end, if you have money, you can have most other things. Of course, it all depends on what kind of person you are. I used to have dozens of 'fake' friends who were okay with me and we used to go out every weekend, but then I decided that because they are 'fake' I don't need them. Now I have few, but true friends.

Of course money doesn't buy you happiness.
But if you have no money, you do not have time to work on being happy.

With money you can chase your dreams like travelling the world, building a nice home, growing a family, do sports, do something good for the society, drive fancy cars or whatever it is that makes you happy. It gives you the freedom to do what you like and get ridof the constant fear of becoming poor and to "fail" in life.

Of course money makes me happy. Well not just me. But everyone around me. The thing is, you need to make a balanced life. Work, social, family, and fun.

Money = freedom to do whatever the fuck you want

That means if you are happier not spending it, you're free not to. If you want to be a millionaire that sleeps rough in a potato sack under a bridge, do it. You won't be the first guy to have money but be happier living modestly.

At least you have the option.

Me being successful makes me happy, setting out to do a job and making it happen to the best of my ability is what it is all about. Money is a bi-product of that really.

Alan Watts said don't follow the money. Do what you want to do in life and get good at it, become a master. The only way to get really good at things and become a master is doing something you have a passion for, but ignore the money.

And if you have a passion for it and you are interested in it, other people will have a passion for it also. Someone is interested in everything, and because you're a master you can charge a good fee for whatever it is... it's stuck with me.

It realy depends on your concept of "being happy"

On my opinion, money helps you to be happy, but it's not the most important thing.

The most important for me is to be with the girl I love and enjoy nice moments with her.

I think a lot of thing are futile, like for exemple, even if I become milionaire, I'll never buy a car more than $4-5K ..., never a buy a watch more than 50$ (witch is already prety expensive on my opinion), jewelry and so on ...

But I want money to be able to be free and do the things I realy like.
Even if I kind of like my work, i'm fed up with working 40h per week, not spending time with my family, friends...
I want more money to be able to work less someday, to be able to travel each month with my girl...
Have an individual house cause i'm fed up with having shitty neightbours ^^

Money alone if you don't have something good to use it for is useless :)

Time = money, so more money = more free time....

I would not rate it #1 by far, but if you have whatever else you care for it is certainly in the next position on the list.

Many people get the word happiness confused with other emotions such as joy, excitement, pleasure etc. Happiness is a state of mind where you are perfectly content in every moment, regardless of the current external circumstances in your life.

So with that said, money cannot buy happiness. Money can, however, buy you fun, joy, pleasure, excitement, health and the freedom to live life in any way that you want (choices). These are all great things to experience and help to create a fulfilling and satisfying life.

Money is not going to make your happy directly, it will however make life easier and problems you may have once seen as a large and difficult to handle, seem as if they are not a problem at all. If your looking for internal happiness, your not going to find that in the amount of money you have. One great way to increase happiness is to do something you love for work.
