One of the predictions that constantly comes up when discussing AI is that in the future AI may be so beneficial to society that it will do all the work and be able to provide wealth to all of civilization, therefore eliminating the need for money. Do you believe this will happen at some point in the future?

Personally I think that humans are driven by status and will always have some sort of currency, even if it is no longer called money. However if 90% of jobs are automated, it's interesting to think about what will happen to the free market and how things will be acquired/purchased.

We use money as a medium to exchange value but we will always use something as a medium.

I think a lot of jobs in the future will be looking over AI in some capacity in case of errors

I tend to agree, there are always going to be things of value and scarcity for things that humans will compete over. Although some sort of UBI and housing program will have to be implemented for the billions that can't or won't provide value to the market

If you know the history, then you will find that answer. Money (Paper money) invented just one century ago..

Can you please elaborate on that?

It's true paper money and fractional reserve banking is a new thing but the concept of money (coins, gold) dates back thousands of years. For all of human history, people have had to generate some sort of value to the world in order to obtain this store of value, but very soon there will be no value to create for billions of people.

Not 1 century ago, but for at least 5k years or so. Before money, there were the exchange (barter), where 2 or more folks exchanged goods/services for goods/services.

I think we'll need money until we manage to convert matter to energy and back efficiently. At that point, we would be able to pretty much eliminate poverty because we would have practically unlimited energy to be able to create food, housing - everything that is needed - making it no longer needed fur currency for trading of goods and services. At least that's the way I see it...

When money becomes obsolete we will have or be moving towards a reputation based currency - you will be promoted, able to buy certain things, go to certain places etc etc based on how worthy society judges you to be.....

I think (could be wrong) China are dabbling around with this concept.....

It sucks, but the elite have to make sure the masses know their place and keep themselves on top......

If you bring someone from the middle ages to our times, they'll say money disappeared already because they can't compare gold coins to a number on the screen called bank account balance.

I think money will keep changing but how are you going to decide if it's still money when it becomes so different that you can't understand it anymore?

It will only get worse. There will be a huge gap between rich and poor. That is, there will be almost no middle class. There will be VERY rich and poor (

I do agree that eliminating poverty is step 1, but that is only one side of the equation.

How is a society going to determine who gets the prime, beachfront California real estate in a world without any medium of exchange? There are always going to be finite things that are inherently valuable which cannot possibly be distributed evenly amongst everyone.

That great, after stealing all jobs ai is going to rob the banks too.
I thought ai is going to give everyone at bhw an ai girlfriend, no?

Money isn’t real. Money is just the manifestation of value.

Whatever humanity deems valuable enough for trade will replace money or some form of barter system, which is the same as money, will exist.

Cut off paper money and you cut off one option for manipulation.

Clearly, answer is No.

What is AI? What is computers? Am I typing the white words on black paper.

Money was invented yesterday by me and I own it all.

Nothing like that will happen. Guys are tripping on too strong stuff lately.

All that may happen is that we will go back to villages and forget about cities taking stuff from cities to live more comfortably.

Living more comfortably - it's the point of civilization. And we seem to be approaching it!

Joke, life is still hellish!! AHAHA

People won't last a day without cleaning stuff and doing chores. Seriously!!

If you take everything from them, they'll still invent new tools and keep on inventing new tools from previous tools and it goes on and on and on.

I think people think that AI == prison for everyone / forced retirement. No, no, no. It's plain paranoia!

A person who values work will never retire. Those who don't want to work, simply drink all day.

In effect doers will do and slack offs will slack off.

Objectively nothing will change!

Roses are red, something is something, I am nobody.

Clearly, answer is No.

If you stop manipulation... you stop being human! This is the foundation of humanity - being able to consciously manipulate environment... and people...

Finally smart comment. Moderator!
