What if I have better skills than a college graduate? What if I'm better than an MBA when it comes to marketing because i have proctical experience of selling/marketing instead of just theory and books injected into my mind..

Do I still need a college degree/certificate to get a job - I'm not saying I'm after a job in Mircosoft or Google... but something that pays decent.

In Pakistan, yes you do need a degree or they won't give a shit about how talented you are... and that sucks big time. :/

I'm in no way looking for a job just yet :p Just want to know what it is like in other countries of the world.

Unfortunately a degree is like a driving license, its just a fast pass to prove you can do something. A degree also shows a potential employer that you are a dedicated individual who sees a project through rather than some super creative guy who can do great work and then dissapears for six months. I am currently studying for an MBA. Ive been self employed all my life and am not looking for employment but for all Ive learnt I would like to have the badge of honour !

In IM or SEO work I would have thought it similar to creative work like copywriting, a good portfolio of previous work will be more valuable than qualifications.

Living here in Scotland, UK - you need a degree, which is why I am working a lot now towards my exams.

It doesn't matter if you're more smarter than someone with a certain degree, it's vital you have it.

Yeah... most companies (especially large) will require a degree to even apply, so without one you're going to be stuck.

It's not necessarily about "knowing more" than someone else, either. That doesn't always make you a good employee. You need to be able to work in a team, you need to be able to network and a load of other stuff if you want to succeed in the "job" world.

If you have a plan to setup a business, You won't need a degree. But you can allocate time with education, get a degree. I've B.Sc Engineer degree and fed up with selection on MBA or Business.

In the UK at least, the overall statistics indicate that graduates will get a better paid job than non-graduates. Having a backup career option is a good idea, as IM for most is not always a guaranteed income. A degree seems the better option to improve job prospects, but having said that, the tuition fees of some degrees here have almost doubled and in some cases tripled in the last couple of years.

If you are going down the degree route, choose a sector for which there will be continuing demand, after you graduate, instead of 'trendy' degrees, so you don't end up in pile of student loan debt with no job prospects. Also, try to get some real world work experience in your chosen field either before or during your degree (some degrees have a 'sandwich year' where you work on an industrial placement).

It is the same here in India. My earnings are currently from online work and I am satisfied with this. But about the marriage I can see just ?????. I have stopped thinking about it because I will not do a job for sure.

That 's pretty much wrong in the programming field. If you 're good you can make a lot of money regardless of location and formal qualifications.

Not having a degree can be a big barrier to entry for the classic 9-5 job market. Nevertheless, if you can clearly demonstrate value, you will find people eager to get you on board.

I had a friend who didn't go to college, but his knowledge about networks was solid, he can beat any CCIE(cisco certified internetwork expert) in interviews. He struggled for a job in India, nobody cared to interview him. He did a hardware job for 2-3 years and he used to get $150 per month. Later he took admission in some computer degree through correspondence course. He got a job in dubai now and he is earning $15,000 per month.

Degree is important in todays world. No matter how much you make through internet marketing.

In the US it's a common misconception that you need a degree in order to get a job. I didn't graduate from college and got a job at the only place I've ever applied, a multi-million dollar internet marketing agency. A degree can only go so far and there are too many idiots out there flaunting their pieces of paper thinking they're the shit when in reality they're just high school alcoholics in twenty-something bodies.

Makes me sick. If you want the upper hand, you have to put in the blood, sweat, and tears and have the courage to stick things out for yourself. Anyone can get a degree, not everyone can make their own breaks.

Or you can do what my pal did and make a fake school and a fake degree in another country. Kill it at the interview, and cross your fingers they never find out. He was making 6 figures down in Miami before moving back to the UK for personal reasons. B.S.ed the whole thing. Never even went to University. Just made up some degree at some "private" school. God Bless him :)
