I have a couple of VAs now and theyre asking if

A. they get free time on holidays, which i think is totally fine, but
B They ask if its paid free time

I dunno about this one. How can i pay them for not working.
What do you guys do? Anyone have experience with this? How is this usually approached?

This thread might be in the wrong section, if so please move it. I couldnt find a better place for it.

Here in PH we get paid by our employers on non-working holidays. Where are your VA’s from?

Please move the thread @Zwielicht

Well if you are giving them holiday from your side then would be payable otherwise there is no paid holidays.

Depends. If they're on a hourly basis (work hour), then no. If you pay daily, which can mean amount to a different salary each month depending on the number of days spent with work, then no also. If they have a fix salary per month, you ought to pay them just like in an offline job.

I concur with HoNeYBiRd. However, the MOST important factor for me is whether I actually like the work they do.

Last year I had one VA (also PH) who did everything I needed with incredibly well and was great at improvising and knowing what I'd want in a situation we hadn't discussed previously (sad he's not working for me now). He asked for something similar. I said no, I don't pay for no work BUT I'll give you a fat bonus for your work. That approach incentivizes hard work more than free days.

Even on fix salary there will be Sunday is a holiday. Except Sunday if they take any other holiday it's not payable.

If they are regular full time VA: You might want to consider paying them for holidays.
If they are ad-hoc VA then you do not need to pay them for Holidays.

I work as an Independent contractor for a company. I do not get paid holiday time.

Sundays, holidays, no difference. You can say that you pay for working days only, but if the salary is fix in every month, you practically pay for non-working days too. It's just a matter of viewpoint.

Agree!

Tell 'em to work more if they want more! Don't let slaves keep you out of line.

Right. But he is asking his VA's asking payment for holidays too. For which type holiday's they are asking, it's not clear yet. :)

I dont really understand what you mean here. U mean that Sundays and holidays are the same thing and should be treated the same?

Im speaking about Philipines employees. There seems to be a lot(?) of christian holidays there. Not sure how i should approach this. Is the fair thing to pay for all of the holidays, only some, none but a bonus system. It dont know really. But i guess im leaning towards the bonus system mentioned earlier here as i like to incentivise good things.

Tell em: I'll pay you 1,2x during the holidays, no work no money, honey.

If you are paying fixed per month salary, you should make it same even if month has much holidays.
else then you decide whether to pay for holidays or not. For mundane, boring work, i am paying extra bonus, but not payment for non working days.
If it worth paying them for holidays pay them. If you are on border of profit line then No or change to VA who happy with your normal pay.

What's the basis of your payments to your employees? Do you pay a fixed salary per month? If yes, that includes paying for holidays, everything. If there's no fixed monthly salary (i guess this is the case here), then no, you shouldn't be paying for holidays, Sundays or any other non-working day unless you want to in the mentioned bonus system. But that bonus system can be applied to Sundays too, because that's too a non-working day normally, that's why i said that there's no difference in Sundays and other holidays from this viewpoint.

Agree with you. No work no money.

@iliketurtlez It's my personal experience. I am giving holiday only on Sunday and if there is most important occasion in a year like Christmas Day, Diwali and Holi it will be holiday from my side because it's an Indian festival mean it is payable except this if they asking me that tomorrow or any other day we have an occasion and i am taking holiday. I said okay but salary will be deduct of that day. Because that holiday not comes in my list.

So create a Holiday List as per Philippines occasion which would be of single day in a year if you take more than this I'll deduct that day payment from the salary which would be decided. Simple.

There are ~26 "scheduled" holidays per year in the PH, then another 5-10 "unscheduled" that a politician declares at their whim. If they are getting paid in USD or via Paypal, then they shouldn't be getting paid time off.

I would however consider matching your own home countries holiday/pay schedule if you wish to be nice about it. Just don't be conned.

FYI tomorrow is a paid day off work if you were in the PH. Who the fuck puts a holiday on a Tuesday?

Great answer. I might come off as a lazy bastard here but would u mind sharing ur list of days eligible for paid day off? For Phillipines that is

Yeah thats why one of my VAs asked now.. Yeah i dunno man, its still confusing. I dont want to exploit my workers but i dont want to get exploited either.
