do you need to ping a blog after you leave a comment?

This is probably the noobliest of noob questions, but:

Say you find a do follow blog and you leave a comment, but the blog entry is from like 2008 or something and so it's not recent. Should you ping it so it actually sees your 5/8/2009 comment? Will it go unnoticed otherwise?

Or is it weird (illegal?) to ping someone else's blog?

I would ping it. Let the search engines know it's updated.

From my understanding by default wordpress pings pingomatic automatically when anything is done with the content. Creating, editing, deleting, commenting all get pinged when created or deleted. I can't remember the settings name off the top of my head, but I always remove the auto ping feature when it comes to my own blogs and use a better solution.

Just seems like one extra step you don't really need to do. But hey, why not if you got the time to do all the blogs just use something like the pinger in SENuke. Get your URL list of successful comments, then load it up and let her rip.

If it appears to be a blog that isn't updated very frequently then I would ping it. If the blog sees a lot of action then I am not sure it is necessary.
 
Wordpress automaticly does this, but heck, do it yourself as well if you really want too, but I don't have the time to do that :P
 
I think you should alert the different services about your update. Some blog platform do it automatically, other don't.

Do anyone know about some "future ping" service like those service that let you tweet in the future?
 
Now when you ping a blog, do you just do the HP url or do you ping the posts url?
 
When i want to ping the comment, how can i get the rss or the comment url ? Thanks
 
Google Ping Blogs - sites such as pingomatic.com work well. As far as getting the rss for comments. Platforms such as wordpress usually have a RSS for comments on the footer. Sometimes a link will be h**p://ww*.thesite(dot)com/topic/#comments

you can try pinging the whole url with the comments like above
 
I would think it is unnecessary on a popular page as it will get crawled pretty frequently anyway. But, if you find a page that is a couple of years old and hasn't been updated I would take the time to do it, especially if it is a good link.
 
As for mass submitters like autopligg and such, do you guys take the time to ping or just submit and forget?
 
I always leave a relevant comment and link anchors. I am proud. At least I leave a relevant comment.
 
If I am going to take the time to leave a relevant comment, I'm going to take an extra two minutes to do a few things:

1) Ping that Blog Post's URL with Pingler

2) Bookmark the Snot Out of It - I do most of my commenting in "runs" so once I drop one I'll add the url to a text file thus creating a list of all the places I've commented on that day. I'll then drop the entire list into Bookmarking Demon in the evening and let the software do it's magic while I sleep.

This usually results in a PR bump for that particular blog post upon the next PR update, which benefits the blog owner...but it also benefits me as well because more link juice is being transfered through to my site.

You can use this method VERY effectively with Article Marketing Automation. Once your article with contextual link is published on various blogs on the network, make sure that you find them and bookmark those posts!
