I'm not talking about competition, I mean like if you were building 5 links per day and you eventually get ranked #1, do you need to keep building links to maintain it? Would Google notice that it's suddenly not recieving backlinks anymore?

Depending on the type of site, there will be natural backlink growth, but at the same time you have to remember, that backlinks also drop off the same way. Plus the guy behind you is always building his, so yes keep building the damn things. Make it part of your growth strategy.

For me I target keywords, and aggressively push them to page two on Google, and then let them move up naturally as I start building around other keywords.
It's tempting for people to only build links to their main url www.somesite.com but remember to build links to your interior pages as well.

Don't build for #1 build for $$$$... honestly... some of my page 2 keywords make more money than my page 1 keywords... The keywords that produce $$$ are worth my time. There are a lot of #1 keywords out there that are totally worthless. Let the money be your guide! ;)

Dadelius is right on the money. Once you hit the number 1 spot, you don't magically stay there... depending on your niche and the competition, you may need to aggressively build links for that keyword just to maintain the position. In other niches you can get the top spot almost immediately and stay there just because you have an exact match domain, it's not as competitive, etc...

Follow the advice above and start going after other related keywords. As you build more content for your site, start building links to those pages as well, targeting keywords that are semantically related to your main target keyword. This will help your site build authority on the subject, which will make it tougher for other competitors and "one-page-wonders" to knock you out of your top spot.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's so quick on here.

I'm implenting the bum marketing method at the moment, I dont actually have my own website. I know this is a noob method but I've only been in the game for a month, so I'm just getting a feel for the SEO at the moment. I have 10 long tail keywords with 10 reviews/articles. My short term goal is to get them all to the number one spot before July. I have researched each keyword, and they all have between 150-300 global searches per month (Depending on how accurate googles keyword tool and market samurai is)

I have one keyword ranked #1 which has made me 2 sales so far. It's been there for 2-3 weeks, but I nearly jizzed in my pants when I saw that first sale.
