how competent do you have to be in SEO to run an SEO business?
I see a lot of these "seo companies" get their clients just normal backlinks that anybody could get. You know, yelp, citysearch, all these directories. Nobody seems to be using PBNs (understandable since you don't want to take any risks with a client's site)

I am sure the clients start seeing some increase in traffic, but is that enough to keep them onboard?

The reason I ask is I am comparing different businesses that I could start and the recurring income from SEO makes it better than the other businesses where there is no recurring income. Like if you get one client and they keep paying you $whatever per month, that would make you rich quicker than let's say web design where you just design the site for a one time fee and you never see the client again.

so the question is: how do these SEO companies survive? like I said, there is nothing special about the backlinks they get. I could get those backlinks too. or clients don't care?

Good question. Don't know how 'good' you have to be but, you do have to give them results. I think the hard part is getting your foot in the door - some have been burned in the past.

not knowing any seo could lead to it being profitable faster. knowing seo would lead to it being profitable long-term. to give a straight answer; no, you do not need to know any seo whatsoever to own an seo business

You can re-sell the services of somebody who knows what he is doing while you can just focus on client acquisition.

With all the crap SEO services around I would say, NO you don't need to know any SEO to make money with a SEO buisness.

usually they hide PBN links, but if the site you are doing SEO on is good, you dont need to use PBN either...

Remember seo and webdesign and css all go together
you have to be as good at webdesign as you are at seo
    and css.

a good web designer has seo in mind while designing the project in Quistion

i am old school , like coding but i am going to be honest i have been playing with wordpress and themes and seo plugins and there very powefull stuff.

into days world understanding wordpress which is self visually explained Is the way foward people design wordpress application to controll websites these days and it all makes sence ......

so being a seo expert can also be half shaved via wordpress , you dont need to
really get hash headaches anymore or lose your mind in design work as long as you understand the thory behind seo and no what your doing you can earn good money monthly, but but i think wordpress and applying your skills make more sense then barebones xhtml, css into days world .

if you think about it these themes and scripts and plugin are so well used and helped via some really big seo experts how can you not use them ...

good luck on your seo business , a good challenge is try and get your seo website to the top of google with the keyword "seo" that your challenge.

Look at the BST section of BHW - you don't need to be an expert or know anything about SEO, just find a good designer for your sales page and you can sell shit in Sahara..!

You will be astonished how its quite the opposite. The more good you are at SEO, the more you will tend to rank your own websites instead of ranking others ^_^

From my perspective I have put in a year of research, and then worked at an internet marketing company for 6 months before I started an SEO and Website design company. I love doing SEO and watching rankings/helping clients get found on Google. I would say if you have a passion for learning, practicing, testing and analyzing SEO you can do it

I always try to learn new strategies, find new software and just hired my first part time contracted employee. (Been doing this for 4 years now)

To answer your specific question, I do use local citations as an SEO service but that alone won't get clients websites ranked. You also need a good mix of PBN links, social media posts, press releases, Web 2.0 links etc. and also know how to diversify anchor text when creating all the links.

Hope this information is useful and good luck on your journey

There are "scorched earth" companies using cold calls, forcing small businesses without a clue into 24 months contracts, deliver shit. No customer stays longer, but for one cancelling, they acquire two new ones. All you need is good salesmen, good lawyers and a lack of moral values. These are the companies responsible for so many clients being sceptical, chances someone had the first SEO experience with a ripoff agency are high.

As a real SEO company, your reputation is something you care for, so you'll have to deliver results, results that aren't gone at the next XYZ update Google rolls out. It's not about being special, there aren't any magicians, you don't need to be talented or gifted, it's just knowledge/experience + hard work, like most other businesses. Knowing how to sell is a real advantage anyway, even the best product won't sell itself automatically.

Btw, webdesign can be great, too, if you sell long term service/maintenance contracts/packages with X hours included each month. Only a few customers will really make use of it, most will pay for knowing you will fix their site if something goes wrong or maybe ask you to replace an image or change a few lines of text once every few months.

You have to provide some kind of results, so the tougher the client, the more you'll need to know. Your average small business owner will probably not be very tech savvy and won't have any SEO knowledge so anything you do have will be enough to provide some kind of service.

When I started to work at the company as a sales rep, my boss made me in charge of Social Media and the company website.. This was prior to me know anything about IM, as I expanded my knowledge I found out how much she was ripping us off. One day we had a meeting and I asked her for the details about her SEO abilities a few minutes into her talking, her face turned red as she started to stumble over her words. At the end of the meeting I turn to my boss and said "SHIIIIIIIIIIT Im in the wrong business"

I'd suggest you at least know the basics for scenarios like this, otherwise people might have a sour taste in their mouths about the internet.

You have to be good at lip service and finding people who do not know anything about it.

No. You just have to know the basics of SEO and be good at sales. Find yourself a cheap "expert at SEO" and give it a shot. While you're growing your client base, learn SEO further. The worst you can do is fail. Even if you fail, you can always bounce back.
