Do you have any experience with sells in direct messaging?
Was it possitive or negative?
What product or service did you sell?
What strategy did you use in order to close the sale?

Direct messaging and cold email/call is still my best performing client generating method. It requires work but it works very well.
I sell services.

The strategy is to speak like a human being to another human being. So you introduce yourself, tell what you do in a sentence, and ask them questions (qualifying). If you don't know if they need your service, then ask if its something that would work for them. If you know they need this kind of service, ask something else.
You ask questions, and move them forward in the sale. Just like you'd do when you're seducing a girl. Take your time, don't seem desperate, and don't project your values on them.
Follow up a couple of times, and it will go well.

Best of luck,

How do you open a follow up conversation without seeming too pushy?

That depends on a million things, just come with something to say. Not just "hey i'm following up".
Just that's determined by your service/product design. So I can't tell you really without knowing what you're selling. You can react to what they are doing in their business, or let them know about the new things you are doing in your business.

Just like speaking to an acquaintance, you don't just say "what's up" or "hi hi hi" I hope. You tell about the new things happening in your work, and ask them about their stuff.

If you just scrapped some random data, its difficult to not seem to be fishy.

If you know what your data is related to or what are their interests it would be a bit easy to look legit and get some conversions.
