I woke up this morning with this in my head and it's been there all day. I haven't heard it for ages and I never liked it. Why does this even happen?

Solution for this Vitamin B1 and Vitamin C - the B1 should be 100Mg strength, 2 a day handles it.

From a neuroscience perspective, the "song stuck in the head" phenomenon is probably caused by an interaction between the structure of popular music and the brain's capacity for predicting complex auditory sequences.

Popular music, which seems particularly prone to the "stuck song" effect, tends to have a repeating structure: verse 1, refrain, verse 2, refrain, ... All verses have a compelling segue into the refrain, and the refrain has a compelling segue equally into all verses. So the circularity of the "stuck song" is already built into the structure of the song itself.

On top of that, popular music is designed to be catchy. The beat drives the song forward, and chord progressions with occasional key changes preserve the illusion of the harmony staying "fresh" even while musical patterns repeat. So in a sense, popular songs have something of an Escher staircase structure. One has the illusion of moving forward when one is really going around in a circle.

Meanwhile the brain, and the auditory system especially, is wired for anticipating what is coming next.

Much of music perception, and especially rhythm perception, revolves around the interaction between what your brain predicts will happen next and what actually happens. For example, rhythmic syncopation is when expected beats are strategically left out, drawing your attention to their absence. The brain's drive to predict melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic sequences makes music perception possible and also allows you to "play" a song in your head when there is no external sound occurring.

If you combine the brain's capacity for musical prediction with a popular song's circular structure, you get something of a "mind virus" that is able to attach itself to the brain's inner thought process.

My A.D.D. is an excellent DJ. I've got all kinds of crazy, off the wall songs popping into my head daily. I was just whistling "Tis the season". Haha.
