Just wondering because I get a lot of recruiters since I'm a software developer. I heard they just try to contact all your friends.

Sometimes i have added unknown people but they were very well known in the advertising industry but i would usually avoid adding people from your industry....so in short no dont add them.

Is your main concern the fact that they will start trying to add your friends?

Yes, if they're a spammer, I'll just delete the contact. You never know where a new business opportunity will come from.

And even then, most well known people aren't requesting invites from you.

What do the requestees want in a connection with you that will benefit them? What do they have that will benefit you? I assume most are trying to leverage me or my network and ignore them.

Exceptions are if they've worked at a **specific company** you want to work at.

I don't usually accept people who don't alter the LinkedIn request message. It's so easy to do, and if they have a legit reason to connect then that is the perfect place to make it known.

I send strangers invites all the time just so I can get access to their friends,I work in media film and TV so its a case of who you know. I would not spoil the contact by trying to spam them though if there a software developer I wouldnt add though,

Linkedin say/used to say you shouldn't. But nowadays it comes under the topic "open networking".
What you shouldn't do is spam in the wrong area.
There are plenty of people who will "add swap" people they don't know. Just join the right groups and/or endorsement/add swap on here.

I do, what if they have something interesting to offer? You can always delete the contact if he or she becomes intrusive. Eventually, I myself ask for connection with those who do not know me from time to time.

If the point is that you don't want to show your connections, you can hide them in settings.

I stopped adding unknown people from companies I've never heard about when I had reached 500+ connections, because I receive tons of spam every day, and it became hard not to miss some important messages..

Hi OP, I m a member on LinkedIn since about 9 years! Trust me when I tell you - it is useless and a waste of time!!! Yes you maybe get (if you are lucky) some agent on, but to see the whole picture there are mostly people who makes them self important and describing there "Professional Experience" to something they wanted to be!
I personally never had any success with that page which I certainly gave up some years ago.

and as stated above in some cases you only get spam or the worst somebody is just looking for information to sell/whatever!!

Remember LI is NOT a Job site.

    peace

Its profitable to add unknown people, only if your profession match with him/her. Also you can get good job offers .

I check first their profession and in which company they are, then I add.
    Their posts,their contacts also matter.

Linkedin is a social networking site for professionals so it's only natural that unknown people will add you on their network. It's up to you to accept or decline their connect request. As for growing your network, especially if you're hosting events every now and then. It's important that you add relevant people to your group so that you can invite them to your events.

They're usually headhuters but yea if you do add them, you'll get opportunities AND some spam. Just manage it by keeping track and remove when necessary.
