How many of ya'll here text message and drive?

I do. Can't see what the big deal is with some states outlawing it. I hope tuning my car radio when i'm cruising wont be outlawed. Thank god there is someone who started a petition to let those politicians know that they dont like it being outlawed >

I thought about getting a headset but it doesn't feel that comfortable.

texting = looking at phone = not looking at road = dangerous = crashes = fatal accidents. that's why they are trying to pass the laws. it's probably 10x more dangerous than being on the phone, and considering talking on the phone is outlawed in some states i think texting should be also.

i can't even text when just sitting let alone driving. now i do on the other hand, smoke a cigarette, drink coffee and drive a stick shift all at once. this is how my brother who is 15 now learned to shift gears when he was 11. i would tell him when to shift for me.

my sister drives and texts. i am not happy about this at all.

I do it on occasion when it's sort of necessary, but I type like one or two letters then look back at the road and repeat. Never seen it as dangerous at all.

It's a dangerous habit. Be careful, try to avoid doing it while in motion. I had a friend of mine die in a car accident because she was texting.

Pretty dangerous. Being involved in a near fatal accident due to somebody who was irresponsible on the road gives you a whole different perspective on the situation and those similar.

If necessary, its quick and at a stop sign if nobody is around, or at a red light.

Nope, I make my girlfriend do it.

Before I would say not bad, when you could text without looking at the phone, but even the best of drivers have trouble texting on all the new touch screen phones.

I could text without looking at my phone and drive no prob but now have a touch screen and I have to look to text so would be dangerous, I agree that it is correct that it is banned.

Even the best of drivers can get it in accident by looking down and have someone HIT them..

accidents can work 2 ways it's not really valid to base it on the driver doing the texting

Um why not? The cause of the accidents are most likely due to the person that's not paying attention, not the other guy. wtf?

Maybe this is why you shouldn't text or talk while your driving. People like this get people killed.

Texting while driving? I don't think so. I can't stand even being behind somebody when they are talking on the frickin phone. I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade-but the typical cell phone user, while driving turns into an ass hat!

Can't tell you how many times someone has changed lanes, without a blinker and cut me off-because they are on their phone.

Or- even better, the ones that go too frickin slow because they can't drive and talk at the same time.

I would hate to be the cause of an accident-so no I don't do either-talk or text.

Why not? If you can't use common sense to figure this out...

MOST LIKLEY.. mabye...
Does not matter who you are if you argue with " texting while driving" and support it and do it yourself.. your an asshat..

I can drink 4 beer and not be "drunk" but I don't drive because it's not worth it.. Driving is a privilege abusers bring it down for the rest of us
talking on a cellphone requires more attention compared to texting out a message that can be easily said in 10 seconds on a telephone

As much as I completely agree - I hate talking on the phone. Why? Because people take it offensively if i throw the phone in the seat next to me while they are in mid conversation. I'm usually done listening long before someone is done talking.

But, point being made, it is very dangerous to drive while texting (even though I am known to do it at times, I've also swerved quite a bit while doing it...not always...but I've caught myself doing it). There are a few studies, I can find them if you'd like, that found the brain patterns of people texting were less focused on driving more so than those who were fiddling with the radio or talking on the phone. They just don't want you doing any hand-eye coordination type movements while you're attempting to feel very carefully and slowly on the steering wheel. It throws things off.

Think of it as running around the house as fast as you can getting your heart beating then trying to play operation. Those little tweezers become a bitch when you've been moving a million miles a second. It's obviously not on that level, but the muscle memory and attention are the same.

Just don't hit me, and I don't care :P
---Says everyone else...

In my opinion, you need to be reasonable about it. To me, on an open highway its fine, in a city with red lights...don't. Also, you shouldn't be looking at your phone to send any messages, if you have to look you shouldn't do it. To do it you need to be able to open your phone, pick who to send one to, type the message and send without looking at the screen for more than maybe 1 second total.

Seeing it only takes a couple seconds for something to change and cause an accident I think its a very bad. Think about how many times you have to look at your phone to read a text and to text one back. Several times.

Although if your at a stop sign I don't see what the problem would be.

I don't. Not because I think it is dangerous but I don't like doing anything else while I am driving so it keeps me from texting.

It should be outlawed. I used to do it all the time when I had my blackberry. I know many occasions I was swerving on the road.

I am super happy I have the iphone now. There is no way you can drive and text with that thing. You really need to be able to feel the keys to drive and text. Hopefully more phones will be like that in the future so less people can drive and text.

Also recently some girl was sentenced to 6 years for texting and causing an accident that killed someone. So keep that in mind the next time you decide to text and drive. You might end up in prison.

for those that didn't bother to click on the link i will paste the text of the petition here:

To: Barack Obama and rest of the world
Petition to Barack Obama and the rest of the world. Don't ban driving while talking or texting on a cellphone. Yes it causes some vehicle crashes but not everyone who uses a cellphone when they drive crash their vehicle and it is the person who causes the crash, not the cellphone. Otherwise what if:

Tens of thousands of drivers crash next year because they were distracted by seeing a beautiful women cross the road in front of them. Should all beautiful women be banned from crossing the road in the view of traffic?

Hundreds of thousands of drivers crash next year because they were distracted by police car sirens. Should sirens on police cars be banned?

A million drivers crash next year because they were distracted by hearing someone shouting 'help me'. Should people shouting 'help me' loud enough so drivers can hear them be banned?

Tens of millions of drivers crash next year because they were distracted by hearing passengers in their vehicle talking. Should passengers be banned from talking inside a vehicle while it is being driven?

So Barack and the rest of the world(including new zealand PM John Key), don't ban driving while talking or texting on a cellphone. Don't be fooled by all this research that says everyone who uses a cellphone while driving is distracted because here is the question you should be asking the people who did the research:

"Did your research test every single person in the country. Yes or No?".

The answer would be No. Out of the people the researchers tested they were distracted by driving while using a cellphone but that doesn't mean every single driver in the country will be distracted when using a cellphone while driving. Think of it like this:

Researchers got a million women from around the country together and the women had to try and start their own business, but all the women failed. Would that mean every single women in the country who tries to start her own business would fail?. No it wouldn't. It just means all of the women that were part of the research failed.

So everyone sign this petition if you do Not want talking or texting on a cellphone by the driver while driving to be banned.
