Anyway. Digg is not a social networking site. It is a social bookmarking site... and in my opinion, one of the worst (they did just rework their ranking formula though, which may actually help some sooner or later)

If you dont have stumblecult (best of the bunch, at least in the way its coded, just such a smaller user base right now its not completely effective yet), piqqus and stumbleudon you are missing out on tens if not hundreds of thousands of hits per month. This is not the only thing I use.... however it is the fastest and simplest way to generate traffic for newbs, especially if you use all of them. It also effects your rank in google searches too!

I'll be over 200k on the month in uniques (from various BOOKMARKING AND Networking sites on a site that is LESS THAN 2 MONTHS OLD). Never spent money advertising. Never spent a penny on links. Never bought traffic. Its way cool to see your page linked (without requesting it) on some of your favorite blogs, that you had been reading for years.

Anyway, I just want to say thanks bhw for helping me make money while doing this.

Now lets explore the differences in the 2 kinds of sites

    Social Networking sites:

A social network service uses software to build online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

    Myspace, Facebook, Adultfriendfinder, Meetup

    Bookmarking sites:

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

    Digg, Stumbleupon, propeller, etc.

Networking sites give shit traffic most of the time. most people just want to stay on that site. Bookmarking sites are just that. links. links to other sites. Your sites. People go there exclusively with a purpose. That purpose: To leave the site. There are VERY VERY good ways to get traffic from these sites. But you have to know how to do it. I've gotten over 20k uniques from facebook in a day with minimal effort. (20 minutes or so, including creating the content on my site)

BHW is a social NETWORKING site. Thus our browsing patterns are that we stay on the site, reading the content generated by other users. Whereas if it were a bookmarking site, it would link us to DP and WF or other places with content.

I just suggest this idea because there is a stark and definitively different surfing pattern that each site's users operate on. You have to understand the psychology of the internet to be truly successful at either and without separating them.

If you are content with 3,000 hits per month then ignore my post. Granted, you should not be using ANY OF THESE SITES if you want to run some types of sites....This does not work for that BAN you have set up. Nor does it work for any other type of site that would basically be a link in a spammy email.

Cliffs: ill read it later and see how much sense I made..... anyway. I think we need a social bookmarking forum and a social networking forum. They have 2 very distinct and different user psychologies operating the keyboards and mice in the hands the users of those 2 sites. we need to be able to identify patterns in order to exploit those 2 very different user groups because the users of those sites are like Fresh Apples and Canned Oranges.
