I haven't tested this. But seriously, does it matter if we use the name username on different social sites to build links? is it really necessary to create unique usernames? Does big G actually have a method to read and compare?

Having the same username on all your social bookmarks / web 2.0s leaves a huge footprint for Google to track down all your BH automated links.
So its a good idea to use different usernames.

You want to brand yourself. Like if you can have all the same usernames on each site it makes you more popular and growing on each account.

I highly recommend to use a unique username for each.
At SEO Thunderbolt, we use a unique username for everything, articles, wikis, web 2.0 and everything else.
Even thought our service really isn't considered to be blackhat, we still do it because this way Google can easily track your backlinks and what you do, as bk said it leaves a big footprint.

I do it even for my personal sites.

I'd recommend use a unique username for EACH account/profile.

And if you are lazy like me, you can code a little software to generate 100 different usernames into spintax form or any form you want. :D
