I have come across this a lot lately where the clients expect leads which I am sure everyone would agree with but we can deliver so much for a monthly fee right?

Do you think once the site starts ranking but the clie nt isn't generating any leads it's obvious to put the blame on the agency? or is it that the service offerings of the client are crap because there are so many competitors that are fighting it out for the top stop with the same services?

Is it right for the client to expect leads when the job of the SEO company is to deliver rankings for the first page?

    @Lilith55 @GringoMonkey @BassTrackerBoats @Heiko @SEOzack @Billy Batts @RenegadeX thoughts?

Usually the client always blames it on the SEO Agency because its easier to tell you that your SEO sucks rather than admitting that the product they are selling sucks.
I would never offer any guarantees in SEO especially leads because i cannot guarantee leads when my client is selling crap. It's on his part to have a good product.
If the client see's that his site is ranking for #1 for his specific keyword(s) and he gets hits but no leads then he can only blame it on himself (if you are only there for SEO and not his website design for example)

Edit: That's why you often see a lot of people here saying they rank their affiliate sites themselves rather than selling their services because customers can be annoying as hell. Especially those that wanna lowball you, they are the worst of all.

    Interesting question.

However, there are quite a few variables at play here.

First of all, it depends on your contract. Are you strictly SEO? Was it your job to boost rankings?

Secondly, once you boosted ranking was there more targetted traffic hitting the website?

If there was and there isn't much conversion I would be looking to CRO the website.

Obviously, something is taking away the conversion.

If you a strictly hired to do SEO and you get that website to the first page, consider your job done.

Testing CRO is another form of revenue, though.

See, its not the first time when client is demanding for leads eventhough the ranking is on first page. But in such cases, just keep working to maintain its ranking on top and also describe to client to keep paitence.

You signed a contract for SEO and get things done. Great ! But what’s the point of the whole SEO game without sales? If you think you can help with their Sales rate which most SEO practitioner should - I don’t see a reason why you not to help especially to keep your monthly revenue flow with the client.

How are you positioning the service?

Have you told the client that with SEO come more leads?

    Are you offering Content Marketing?

Did you position your service as "Digital Marketing" and are you sure you've been understood?

The client will blame it on you if you haven't been clear, it's a bad client, underpays you and expect you scale his business to Amazon level, it's a old ass guy that doesn't understand shit and was already angry with you when you stated your price and he accepted etc etc

Also, are you taking clients that are already doing good but you can increase the good foundation that's already there? Or are you his last hope?

    MY REAL LIFE EXAMPLE:

I just take on 2 of my friends from my old hood that happen to have started an Instagram Agency and a client is worth like 6000€/year, but they only have 2.

They have no experience in phone sales, I'm their last hope. I made a super high converting funnel for them that brings 1 free strategy session (potential sale) at 5€/each and they can't even close one client... We spent 1000 dollars on Facebook in the last 3 weeks that brought almost 200 prospects. As of now, they called 60 of them.

They're blaming it on me, "obviously", because the prospects didn't want to buy.

I took one of their calls in my free time (I was doing calisthenics), turned the prospect into a potential close, they just had to call him back and take his data.. Guess what happened?

The client changed his mind when he talked with one of them.

And for them it's my fault... That's so funny to me.

But I do not know about their service offerings as there are other competitors too right?

I got them in top 3 but they now want leads lol...you think they gonna change the site structure for more leads?

@TheVigilante you asked for my opinion, your probably not going to like it!

Seo is a complete waste of money for any business that does not already know what keyword to rank for.

In my opinion you should first sell google adwords management or target companies that already invest in adwords. Then point out they can increase value with seo, once they can see roi on the keyword.

Once you point that out to them they would be an idiot to say no.

Every business is pitched everyday, so they are looking for a reason to say no. To close don't give them that reason. If you cannot then your seo service is probably not appropriate for them.

It depends. If you are getting high organic traffic via SEO efforts that it will definitely gives you a lot of leads. If you still struggle with the SEO of your website, you still can drive leads with paid techniques like PPC, SEM, SMM etc.

I think you misunderstand my point.

If you have the budget to pay for seo which keywords should you do it on?

In my opinion the only way you know is to see which adwords search terms bring in revenue and then pay for them.

The SEO works in a very different way then SEM/PPC. I have used both these. You can easily rank your Ads in Search engines using PPC and paying high for them with a little efforts even for high competition keywords but in case of SEO, you have to put in a lot of efforts to get on to the top of search results. So, it is not a good idea to target a PPC search term in SEO if that is having high competition.

Business is all about selling based on roi.

If i pay $200 per click for "life insurance in london" and i make money, it is really easy to sell to a client $1000 per month to rank first page and pay $0 extra. :)

If i dont pay for adwords and so have no conversions, first you have to educate me about the benefit of seo. In my opinion, dont get involved in any business you first have to educate the client before they buy.

I didn't got your point. But if someone needs quick leads then only PPC is better option but if you need long term and consistent results, you have to go for SEO.

I appreciate your effort as english is not your first language. Whatever your primary language is i have 0 understanding, so you are better than me!

Seo only has value if you understand keyword research.

If i am paying for seo, the only way i know to be 100% sure of kw research is first run an adwords campaign and see how much money you make. If you make money targeting a kw from an adwords campaign, then that is the keyword to target with an seo campaign.

Anything else you are just guessing.

So in my opinion, if you have the money to pay for someone to do seo for you, it is a waste. First you should run an adwords campaign, only then pay for seo.

@TheVigilante if you are prepared to put yourself in the place of the prospective client, pitches tend to write themselves.

If you target people who are already running adwords, it is like low hanging fruit, you don't have to educate them, you are simply saying "you are paying for ads on x keyword, we can also rank you for that keyword with SEO." They know they make money with that kw, your offering to help them make more.

For people that do not run adwords you can first say "let us set you up and adwords campaign you will start to get new prospective customers in x days, if we are not able to get you more sales you can cancel." They don't have to worry about paying for something that might work or not 6 months down the line. They get a pretty much immediate answer, plus you can sort any landing page issues out to ensure the kw is profitable for them. Then when it is you upsell them SEO later down the line, using the above existing adwords pitch.

The client is paying you to rank for a said keyword agreed before seo comes in.
If you rank the site on first page you get paid for the amount of clicks to the site coming from that search (this can be known beforehand and can be tracked when ranked). That's it.
If they don't know how to handle those clicks is a different kind of beast not related with seo.

It's a good thing your opinion does not matter to most people in SEO. Even though English is not his first language, he makes himself understood in a more logical way. Like he said, SEO and SEM/PPC are two different beast, the keywords from adwords might have nothign to do with the SEO strategy.
