If I rank for gaylord ass cunt for #1, and I have blasted it with some backlink program. Do I rank #1 no matter if the backlinks gets deleted? or?

Also, if I rank #1, do I need to keep up creatng backlinks? or can I just let it go?

I think that fact that you had to ask the question means that you already know the answer but want confirmation.

Nothing lasts forever, it might not happen straight away, but there will always eventually be a site thats trying to outrank you. dont make the mistake of getting complacent. Maintain a steady flow if links to your site. A sudden stop in new links is a clear indicator to Google that somebody has been doing some form of SEO and then stopped when the results where achieved.

If a site were to rank totally naturally then chances are that there would be at least a stable flow of new links to is as more sites find its content relevant and link to it.

Google loves link velocity. If you are already at top position in Google then keep building links from different sources for a few months and you will see your website stays there for long even if you take a respite for some time.

I always look at it like putting on a roof. If you never do any maintenance to it, eventually it will fall into dis-repair and it will cost you a lot of money to fix it again! It doesn't happen overnight, but it happens (time-frame depends on niche, competition and keywords).

I hear a lot about link velocity and think its a bunch of crap. What is more natural, building 40 links per day or building 100 links one day, 10 links the next day, 2 links the next, 55 the next?

Its not natural to build the same amount of links to your site on a daily basis, THAT is unnatural. It is more natural to build a random number of links to your site on a daily basis.

Neither answer is right. There is no magic number. What is right is that you maintain on somewhat of an ongoing basis, link building.

If you have a competitive keyword, remember your competitors are going to come up behind you - if you get complacent in link building, eventually they will outbuild a larger number of links, citations, reviews, etc. and dethrone your position. Do whatever it takes to show Google their is regular interest about your site, and do whatever it takes to continue to have a greater # of links than the guy in position 2 or 3 or whatever.

Once you've built enough backlinks from in your site, continuous adding of content/articles will let you stable even though you turn to build backlinks slowly in the latter.

true, but depends on the niche. I obtained 1st ranking for a 8k exact local KW 1 year ago. Haven't updated the site in 9 months and I stopped doing all seo on the site once I hit #1.

Rankings can change anytime, if rankings never changed, we would all be a in bad situtation. Think if a site had a monopoly over certain keywords, that would be bad. Although certains sites already do for a very reasonable reason...

Everything in this life is temporary my friend. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Interesting to read the answers in this thread!

Your rankings may stabilize somewhat once enough links are there, but nothing is ever truly permanent in the SEO world, including rankings.

You will have to continuously do link-building for your website in order to maintain rankings.

It depends on how much competition there is, regarding HOW MUCH link-building you'll have to do to keep your rankings.

A good piece of advice is: when you have top rankings, that's the time to do even more link-building (within reason) in order to create more distance between you and your competitors.
