I know they can obviously bring clickthrough traffic but other than that are they useless?

Yahoo takes nofollow links into account when crawling your site.

I thought the purpose of nofollow was to keep from passing page rank? Does this mean that G has been lying to us all along?

No follow keep from passing link juice. No follow is googles thing for serp position but its not universal for the other search engines.

    1. If you want Se traffic in any significant amount, Google is the only engine you need to pay attention to.

    2. Nofollow strips a link of all its rank-assist value (not just juice - everything else too, relevance, anchor etc) in all cases.

    3. My comments here have nothing to do with indexing of links or sites.

My personal opinion is, no follow helps by making your linking look more natural. If all you have is do follow links at some point big G will figure out a way to find this and penalize you. It's just not natural. If you do have no follow it looks more like natural linking not link building, my 2 cents. That is why you should have some of them in there.

Nofollow was invented so webmasters could help Google identify those links for which they cannot vouch.

Nofollow links are almost exclusively links which could potentially be used for spam, e.g. web 2.0 pages or comments / wikis.

For this reason, I think that the fewer nofollow links you have, the better.
