First of all is it effective to change the meta description for each page if I want to target different keywords depending on the page? And if so, can I just keep the bulk of the meta description and just change the individual keyword? For example:

    Page 1 - "Wouldn't you like to have a blah blah keyword1"
Page 2- "Wouldn't you like to have a blah blah keyword2"

Or should each meta description be totally unique?

I usually keep a bulk of the description and change the KW. Haven't had any problems with that, but I'm just a noob.

I do not recommend my clients to just change the keyword in the meta description and keep the other phrases.
    That's a no-no for me.

Your meta description is the chunk of texts that appears on SERPs right below the title.
It always pays good to have engaging, entertaining, alluring and click-inviting meta description while you play on your keywords.

Do you have lots of pages that's why you're struggling to write a unique meta description for all the pages?

I've never bothered to try to make them unique, and no problems for me :)
