I have a site that I sell social media services on. Over the past year I've made many sales, and now I decided to copy all of the customer emails into an excel file, and from time to time send emails about discounts or whatever - like December New Year discounts, shit like that.

What I'm unsure about is whether I should save their Paypal emails, or emails they submitted when ordering (they're often different), or both?

At first I made peace in my mind that I'll just save the emails they submitted, not their Paypal emails. But now that I've sat down to do it, I have doubts.

What do you guys think?

I would safe them and at the same time make sure you asked them or get the confirm it's OK that you send them your e-mails :)

You mean you would save them all? Paypal and not?

And how would I ask them? Email all of them asking for permission to email them? :D hahah no, forget about that. They'll be receiving no more than 4 emails per year from me. If anyone has an issue with it, reply, say so, and I'll remove their email from the list.

Just put it in the TOS of your site, that you occasionally send promotional emails and before they order/register, make them agree to your TOS. And when you send the emails, don't forget to include an unsubscribe link.

If they order something using an email address, it means that they check that inbox, so saving the PayPal address and sending your emails there too is not necessary imho. Some people don't check their PayPal addresses at all and sending to both addresses is a bit pushy.

Thanks for the tips.

I already have something to that extent in my privacy policy - "We may use personally identifiable information collected through our web site to contact users regarding products and services offered by us and otherwise to enhance our users experience."

So I guess that has me covered.

I mean, not that I'm losing my mind over this. I don't live in a 1st world country, so any legal trouble getting to me is highly unlikely.

I agree that sending to both emails is a little pushy. But I've saved all emails in a spreadsheet, so when time comes to send out an email, I'll decide what to do then.

Thanks again :)
