Do I risk something for doing this? What?

So basically, there is a popular streaming movie site in my country, which is warez.
What I did: I registered the same domain name with another .tld and I built another, similar warez streaming site.

I did this to get some free cash not to harm anyone.

Now the owner of the warez site contacted me and told me this:

Hi we are the staff of ***, we ask you immediately to change the name of the website to something more original or you will suffer some nice consequences, you have a few days.

What does that mean? what do I risk? Can they do something legally?

sounds like an empty threat, or if anything, some sort of denial attack or spam neg seo. But depending on your country, i suggest installing a deadbolt or 7

The message doesnt looks likes legally drafted, but expect some ddos attack soon..

Legally, there's no way for them to do any kind of stuff,
It's most likely some kind of attack (DDOS, a shit load of spam links, etc...)

first look if they are legit but even there not they can report you i ll advice to change is not like you fighting for a million dollars in this case but analyse if is worth all that stuff but if you dont care go only you know

Rule of thumb is always
If it's a legal company, have expectations of legal actions taken
If they are running an illegal operation, have expectations for illegal actions taken

Why do people do shit when they don't know shit about the shit they are doing then panic when they think they might have stepped in shit and come here asking for help with their shit?
:p

I guess the long and short of it is it depends on the intellectual property laws of the country you're in.

Also, if the other side is threatening you with certain consequences, you might have a lawsuit on your hands.

So it’s a good idea to research what the IP laws are in your country—is it okay to do what you did?

My understanding is, unless the other guy’s domain name is associated with a trademark, they can't go after you.

Also, check with your host or your domain registrar.

They could pursue you, since they are the legal owner of the domain name.
