Hey, so i'm planning on getting into offering seo services to local business in the near future, and was planning on creating a bunch of subdomains and building my links to them and 301 redirecting them to the clients sites. But do i need to have related content on the subdomains or will the link juice pass through without it?

Also if i'm creating the subdomains on an unrelated domain (niche wise), would it have any effect as well?!

    Thanks :)

The link juice will pass on, but so will the risk. If you're trying to "filter" your backlinks through a 301 redirect to prevent Google from penalizing the site for shady links, this strategy won't work at all. Google will see through it in a heartbeat. Best case scenario, you'll waste all your effort and the links won't help at all. Worst case scanario, you'll get your client's side penalized or even banned.

Content or not doesn't really matter. When you 301 someone, they jump straight from the old site to the new site. They never see your site; and Google more or less treats your site as if it doesn't exist. It might matter a small amount, but not a whole lot.

Thanks for the replies. But im not trying to 301 penalized domains anything like that. I want to build the links to my subdomains and redirect those into the customers sites because my plan is to charge them a monthly for ranking them in the top spots, and so if they don't want to keep paying i can contact another site in the same niche and redirect it the new site then. In essence id be using the fact that i can take it away and offer to their competitors as leverage to keep them paying.

Maybe im wrong but the way i see it is, even if i do build blackhat links to my subdomain and redirect to their site, if anything happens, surely if i remove the redirect their site should no longer be affected?!
