Do I Have To Have Followers For Ping.It To Be Effective?

I see that a lot of the professional SEO gurus are using Ping.It to ping Web 2.0 properties, so I decided to do it myself.

I don't have any followers on Ping.It and I don't think they would appreciate me pinging an article about the same subject from several different Web 2.0 sites anyway.

So, is it effective if I ping my sites with no followers?
