    Hello

I have always used free email providers to send mass emails. I want to change to a VPS since free emial providers have limits. the way I think it should be done is like:

    1. Get a domain and put it on the VPS
    2. Setup SMTP server on the vps
    3. Connect from home pc and send emails using the VPS's SMTP server.

Is that the way its done?

    Best Regards!

Thanks, I read the article on wiki, but this was the first time I heard about it. Do you have anymore resources that would give me more info? Basically I coded a autoresponder that works with SMTP, would that come to use when using MX Record? I'm totally a newb when it comes to emailing with VPS

VPS Is just a kind of a server and it has it's on limitations as well from your datacenter hosting it.
Don't expect to send a ton of emails without them coming down on you like a ton of bricks unless they are spammer's friendly which will probably cost you a good coin.
There's more to mailing than just getting a vps.
grab a redbull or two and do some reading...

    hello xpro,
well in order to send emails I'm not quite sure if you need a Mx record, thats a good question...
but if don't have the email service properly installed you could run in to a lot of problems...
By example: wen you are connecting from home, how will the server know that you are trying to send an email? the MX record is a DNS record and he translates domain names to ip, if your server is not configured to convert the smtp name to a ip and a port I think he wont work..
... only testing I would be capable to help you out.... What is the Os you have on the VPS?

    mean wile check this article:
    http://rimuhosting.com/support/settingupemail.jsp?mta=sendmail

frojat is right VPS have several limitations.. :S but maybe there is a work around those limitations :D

    regards

Thats what the SMTP server is for. I will be using Linux. I will get a Linux VPS and install a SMTP server on it and I think that should work fine
