I was thinking about testing out some free domains on some small landing pages of mine, but I always wondered how much an influence a free domain has on a site ranking. Does anyone know about this ?

Free domains ? .co.cc and .tk ? These domains will never gain trust from google.

.co is not free and is different from .co.cc domains.

I want to say no it won't have any adverse affect but frankly the Google algorithm is so complex that you can't even know.

If it is a keyword for which you are going to have to do a lot of work to rank for, get your own domain for which you have control over. Whatever it is that you do not own, they can always claim it back.

I'd recommend using a blogger or wordpress blog domain over those free ones anytime. And yes, from experience, these do rank well.

Free domains can rank but from what I've seen of people's sites that I have known it's not easy and even then I believe it's a lottery.

Think about how many pages of pure shite there must be on any one of these free providers and I'm pretty sure that Google will take into consideration the amount of spam, virii and malware and restrict spider action accordingly.

Didn't Google ban/de-index .co.cc completely at one point because of it's content ?

If I use blogger.com or wordpress.com blog and then buy a .com domain for them can they still be removed easily ? I like using them but could they remove my blog easily even with custom domain ?

Since they are still hosting the content then yes. You would only be in control of the domain, but they could delete all your content at will. However if you are not using them for the subdomain, why wouldn't you just pay a couple of bucks to get hosting yourself and slap wordpress on it?
