Off the top of your head, do you know any sites that are strictly forums, that rank well for good keywords?
I have a couple forums on some of my sites, and they bring in fantastic traffic, but they are all long tail keywords, plus I have dozens and dozens of unique content outside the forum.

I'm wondering how well a forum only site would rank for bigger keywords?
I just started a forum, and really didn't plan on adding content to it, atleast not for a while.

    Thoughts?

I know forums are only ranked for long tailed keyword, because of user generated content.

But I really dont know, I cannot see some forums that ranked good at high competition keywords.

You can rank forum well by:

    1. Daily fresh content/posts
    2. Less OBL and External Links
    3. MODS must be in action for 24 x7
    4. Share unique ideas on you forum which generates a good traffic on him

How in all that is holy does one reduce OBL on a FORUM?

lol this post, come on: fresh content, low obl, active mods, unique monetization ideas. I'm pretty sure OP knows all this.

All a forum needs is a stable population; forums rank themselves.

The approach you are taking is wrong I am afraid. If you are trying to create a forum and want people flocking to it, preferably every day then create good content on it . Create awesome content on it. Why do you come to blackhatworld everyday? Do you come from google? I am pretty sure most of the traffic BHW gets is direct traffic. Why is that? Because people love this forum! They have access to so much information here. I dont understand why you wouldnt want to add content to you forum now? Add awesome content and add it now. Give value to our users and you dont have to depend on Google or any other search engine for that matter.

Well obviously I'm going to add content, but I'm not making this a huge project, just a side project, with a lot of word of mouth and social media. I have built a core group of a few people who are experts in the subject, so it will be a desired forum. But the whole point of my post was I want to rank for some bigger keywords.

As long as there's constant activity. As a user, if I search a site and think its authority but then see a forum and it's a ghost town.. I ditch that site quick. I don't know, just dosent have a good feel to me. The opposite though if the site has lots of activity in the forum. Then i'm all," hey this site is legit!" And stick arround for awhile. I guess you could hire ghost posts untill ya get volume.

I'd rather use forums to rank.
