I know there was an algorithm update that reduced the power of exact match domains with the respective keyword. But does is it a factor at all anymore? Some guy is trying to sell me an exact match .net domain name for a keyword that I work on with close to 2,000 searches per month. Is it worth buying it?

For SEO, the answer is NO. Nowadays the keyword domains have almost no value for ranking.

Maybe a bit, but great for branding.
I have a 10+ year old EMD with some great links, and still barely ranking. It's crazy.

I've never used them, although I do see them rank for keywords with low to moderate traffic occasionally. However, just looking at the fact that the domain was exact match alone is ignoring every other factor used by the algorithm to rank a website.

There was a period of time, between 2004-2007 where I *KILLED* it with EMD's and Google Adsense. It was a no brainer back then. Numbers game. 500+ emd sites are cranking away loving that traffic.

But now? Move on from them. Not as valued anymore from the the contextual data variables google uses in its indicies to place your site.

These days I seem to get a lot of emails selling me domains in my niche, the first thing I think is penalty hit domain.

Everyone keeps going on about emd not working i recently bought 2 emd for my keywords and there both on page 1 with very little effort in less than 2 weeks. The competition wasnt exactly high but it must mean something.

I think they may have a bit, but it used to be really high.
I used to have EMDs on the front page with zero links.

EMD's help me out, definitely. It obviously doesn't give the massive boost it once did, but I always see my emd keyword ranking first and fastest even when its not my main keyword.

Is it worth buying? The answer to your question is dependent on the price of the domain name. If you think it's worth the price, buy it. If not, don't.

Exact keywords in domains is no longer a ranking factor, and that's why branded domain names can outrank exact match domains with the right backlinks.

Some say the value of exact match domains has decreased. But, in my opinion, the value is gone completely. I recently created a new site to test the effectiveness of exact match domains and the domain ranked as fast as my branded domains do.

    Not conclusive, but instructive.

It depends on the competitiveness of the niche. Usually EMDs are getting sandboxed because the users spam the hell out of that exact anchor text.

    I don't recommend buying it...

    Hi,

EMD use to have bonus but that's not the case.

Now, there is no negative effects of EMD till you keep on-page optimization and off-page optimization under control.

    Thanks.

I think EMD still has bonus at bing. I ranked my EMD domain at bing with minimal effort, almost no backlinks. So maybe if you get a good search volume in Bing it could be a good idea.

EMDs and PMDs still have an effect on rankings, but it's pretty negligible most of the time, which is why people are saying to try something else. The reason that they don't have a greater effect now is because too many people used and abused EMDs in the past, so Google and other search engines had changed update their algorithm so that EMDs and PMDs have less of an effect than they had before.

EMD will work with very low competition kw but not for the kws that others want to go after as for as ranking is concerned. For branding, you have a better chance with a dot com since most people enter dot com when entering a domain name.
