I have always wondered if it was just another myth that had been regurgitated so many times in the forums that it eventually stuck. Do you really see benefit in these types of links? Imagine you have a site selling dildos and chains and whips. Does google really see benefit of having some education or government site linking to you? This can go for almost any products out there.

Is this just another warrior forum myth or just something in google's algorithm that says edu and gov links are great no matter what kind of site you have. I have yet to see any benefit but then again I never really thought they would have worked so maybe I have not used them enough. It just seems an too easy of a way to manipulate google, therefor I wouldn't see it working

Well, they have high PR at the very least so that never hurts. But they are a pain to do. If someone could invent a piece of software that could blast these things out 500 at a time you would have a goldmine on your hands.

Thanks for the gay picture but ya, I do try the search button and I can never find anything remotely related to what I am searching for. Thanks for the amazing insight :)

Yeah, vBulletin's search feature isn't exactly amazing indeed :) But using google with "site:blackhatworld.com" is a pretty good option.

P.S. Apologies if my above post sounded rude. Just got a bit pissed off as it's literally at least the 5th thread I've seen on this topic within the last few weeks alone.

They work great, although personally I don't think its just because of the TLD but because the TLD can only be registered in an official capacity it means virtually all of these are high authority non spammy sites which is why they carry so much weight.

I used to sell packages and most of my customers were repeat guys because they saw good results also, IMO they are great if you have your source for auto approves so you don't have to hunt for them and they are always a part of my SEO campaigns.

I developed one but let me tell you its not as easy as it sounds, they constantly get closed or have anti spam measures put in place, its a lot of tracking down new sites all the time although still a far cry better than manual posting.

Good for link diversity if nothing else. I will generally throw in a .edu package on any site I am working on just for good measure.

No problem. But why would that piss you off? If something like this pisses you off, then I do not want to do something that "actually" pisses you off. It is a forum, people write posts and not everyone is going to use the search feature every time. I will make sure that every time I start a thread, I will use the search feature just for you ;)

They really give great SERP boost for local sites so I think they have more value than regular TLD's

By the way, I'm glad the question was asked again. I did a search as suggested and the responses of past threads were from newbies with no rep or track record of trying to be helpful. This time around there's moderators, people with 200+ posts, donors and vip's chiming in.

I built my own list of 0-15 OBL list of EDU sites, with a PR of 0-5. I have 89 now. I used them on one websites with a low-moderate keyword with EMD domain. It's not had a MASSIVE effect. So... I'm still in 2 minds.

.edu list found from this forum worked well for me for one of my websites I used it.
It was a blog commenting list... and usually after 100 comments you will have 30 left, because the rest will be deleted.
But I worked i think in my case.

    Worked great for Overstock.com

They killed it until the WSJ wrote an article about it that embarrassed Google and got them slapped.

i do a lot of work around real estate in last months and got great results - still at some phrases my client's site is not ranked well at google maps... when i ran seomoz check it went out that it has authority lower for around 30% so I believe it shall boost soon with some gov and edu links.
