I would highly recommend to not redirect all non-existing pages to the homepage, speaking from experience here.

404 is very bad for your site, fix all those errors ASAP(manually removing all is not easier, so you have to use some redirects)

Why can't I do it manually?

What is the best way to remove them? I read here that redirects are not good.

Manually delete them all, there no point keeping 404 errored links anyway ....

a broken link in seo or web design was the first steps you learnt from designing websites of course they need deleting or fixing to the proper destination .

you never point a 404 to your home page as this will be class as duplicate link and that lower your seo strength in serps.

you must be confused with 404 error and a 301 re direction linking , as ive seen a lot of internet adverts saying get top of google with 301 links.

Yes, broken links are a part of owning or managing a website & if they're not addressed, they can hurt your long term SEO efforts. If a search engine spider visits your site and comes to lots of dead ends or broken links, it can cause problems and diminishes the value of your website in the eyes of the search spiders.

Use Google Web master Tools to find the broken links to fix. There are other tools available, but Google Web master Tools is the best. We check broken links for our clients each month. Once you see a broken link, you should figure out why before you fix it. That way, you can identify the root cause, which may prevent other broken links.

Google Web master tools display any broken links in your web master tools dashboard. In the past, error messages were tough to understand, but Google has made recent changes to help create a clearer message for even a non-technical website owner.

Hope, this is what you are looking to. Best Wishes - BB.

Thanks. I use google webmaster and wanted to make sure that it is the best way. I was reading the article on Yoast before I saw your response. This is a clean and straightforward response.

Yes he does. But let me add up a few bit.

    1. If the pages aren't important to you, personally i would add some useful articles in the pages and update them, but if they are not useful, then you have to delete them, every single one of them. You have to manually delete them.

    2. Use the 404 redirect post to homepage plugin, so all 404 pages are redirected to Homepage.

    Hope this answers your question.

Google console sent me email saying that I don't need to do anything and they will be removed from search engine.
    is that enough?

To answer your first question, 404's do affect SEO, more accurately the ratio of 404's compared to live pages does affect SEO.

You can use Screaming Frog SEO spider to detect the 404 and then remove them.. it's free to use.

Unbelievable how many people fall for a classic SEO myth. 404 errors don't harm your site in any way. Period, own experience proves this as well as a multitude of official statements from Google. They'll disappear over time.

What affects SEO is if external links are pointing to 404 pages since these links are removed from the link graph and don't count any more. A general 301 of all 404 to the homepage won't help much, since they are treated as soft 404s.
