A site is ranking on a 33k search and has 1 backlink according to ahrefs

The site has 587 tweets, 1.8k facebook likes and 33 fb shares

Does social media really only matter now?

I'm hearing that a good mixture is very important these days, if that's a relatively new site (only 1 backlink) it's possible they're in some sort of grace period and will be knocked down the ranks in the coming days / weeks.

There are also sites ranking with little or no social media presence, so I don't think that's it.

Advanced web developers can smartly block backlink spying by editing the robots.txt, bascally they have blocked all user agents apart from google bots, which means that using tools like ahrefs will show the site having none (or very little) backlinks, when in fact they can have thousands

They still matter.

You can block arefs and other backlinking sites from scanning your backlinks.
Oh yeah, welcome to SEO.

Here's a tutorial

This sort of thing would only work if you had full control over your tier 1 links. It's handy for keeping your private blog network private, however ahrefs and similar can still crawl the backlinks to your site.

Think about it, a backlink links to your site, so your not stopping it being crawled by blocking ahrefs from crawling your site, as all your links are external to your site.

However, if you block all bots except G to the tier 1 links that you control, then those links to your money site cannot be crawled and will not show up in ahrefs or similar.

Backlinks are the strength of the website.
Backlinks was, is and will always matter for the website in terms of the SEO.

and yes, my web is 3 month old (nearly 3 month)

Backlinks do matter. That's like asking "Is SEO dead?"

Slowly building high quality backlinks will raise your site.

THIS meaning if they have a private blog network they can block spiders for the tools but how can they block domains they cannot control? They cannot.

So it is either a honeymoon effect OR they operate a private blog network that blocks tools like majestic and ahrefs.

Moral of the story if you suspect they are using a blog network try to get your link on blogs, guest posts, web 2.0 creation or even build your own network or just buy some blog network links if you feel like going black hat.
