I was just wondering how many of you in here actually have 9-5 jobs outside of IM?

ME i was thinking about getting a little small parttime gig in my computer field. i have been getting bored sitting at home and I love working with cpu's, so the part time gig wouldn't really bother me

im pretty sure if you make a steady income from IM, you should continue doing it. Who really wants to work for a boss? This is potentially one of the best jobs in the world and many people would die for our knowledge.

I do, I work as a whitehat SEO though, so what I learn at work is pretty useful for IM anyway.

No I have a 24/7 Job . However here are the benefits.

    I am my own boss.

I make as much as I allow myself to make. That statement in itself is very powerful. Think about it like this if you can make a dollar a single dollar online can you make 100? Yes. If you make 100 can you make 1k? YES If you make 1k can you make 10k? YES If you make 10k can you make 100k? Once again the answer is yes! It is all a matter of scaling it up and working harder, and hiring outsourcers.

    However here are the downsides.

No vacation. You have 2 options go one Vacation and let your competition stick it to you hard. Or not go on vacation and make money.

No dental health or life. Yes you have to provide all this for yourself.

No retirement plan. Once again you have to do this yourself. You can open an IRA at any bank but do you trust banks with you retirement fund?

Jealous people will try to take what you have as well.

Now these are problems you have at in the workforce as well. It is a give and take the moeny is nice but you have to always be on your toes.

I used to work a fulltime job...did it for 4 months before I quit and worked for myself. I've never looked back. It was a great job, but I'm not a cube farm rat, and I'm not the type of person who can survive working for someone else.

edit: I have a couple of small WH businesses but their size coupled with the current economy means it's pretty hard to actually make them viable. Once I have enough capital I'm going to get them up and running fulltime again and hire some people to manage them for me.

So from this thread i get that most of you have no job or have failed to work for anyone else.

It's nice to know i'm one of the few who is a success.

All very valid points. That being said, it's always good to remember that your work product as an employee is paying for the retirement, health insurance, life insurance, misc benefits, lights, computer, desk, etc.

And it's no different if your working for yourself in IM.

I think too many people forget to plan and end up chasing in IM.. Simply because they forgot to plan for the totality of the expenses involved. I built up by having a small core of commercial customers that I develop, host, and monitor locally. Then built my own suite of products that I IM. It's a good mix.

I get out of the office on a regular basis for my whitehat local customers. And use my IM activities for current and future residual income, apply new ideas, etc. from IM for my local customers in whitehat mode. A testing ground that benefits my local people and helps me with my IM activities.

And yes, every week I update my daily schedules for the week and month. Every month I update next month and next quarter. Every quarter I update my annual planning. Financial, Activity, and Venture. This way you can know where you've been, where your going, and what your doing so when opportunity arises, your prepared and can "pull the trigger" only when an opportunity is right for you.

Instead of chasing tails all the time.

    1-9 for your Keyword goodluck

So what you are saying is that you are a success because you have a JOB??

I think you need to read the responces again.

I have a job, and have worked 25 years, only because I have failed to make enough [I did at one time] to not have a job.

Now that I have a family I will work longer than I should [200k in bank + income] before cutting strings [insurance benefits]
