if you made a website about pretty pink bunnies and you went on a backlinking strategy of using anchors like "anal sex" "hard core anal" etc would you start ranking for these keywords in semrush, or do you only rank for content? or is it a mixture of both

It is a mixture of both.

You would rank for "anal sex with pretty pink bunnies"

    Sounds like a winning niche!

You would rank initially (provided that Penguin didn't catch on quickly) and once google picked up on user behavior patterns from your site (along with some content algorithms), your site would fall out of ranking for those phrases.

This is a big mistake made by many site owners and even lame ass SEO "experts." They look at overall traffic and see the site spike in traffic just to see it fall back down once the site no longer ranks for these junk queries. They see it as a "successful" nseo attack when it's just a natural progression of Google determining that the site is not relevant for queries it was ranking for.

Very common with shitty SEO "experts" to claim that a site can't rank because it's been attacked.

Although archon posts a lot of troll stuff, much of which is pretty funny, this is spot on and he/she has some real SEO knowledge so it is worth reading when he/she goes there.

You would be surprised how many sites I have, and still do, work(ed) with that have all kinds of "neg seo" anchors that rank well for their desired KWs as opposed to the attack KWs.

Perhaps Neg KWs were once a serious threat to the rankings of a site, that trend has been history for some time now if you have decent other SEO for the site.

It's a mixture of both, for sure. The content and the anchors are both very important.

Now-a-days content and keywords both play an important role. So you can use both for ranking a site.

You can mix both and create some long tail anchor.

It's a combination of both, if you want to get an idea what keywords google picks from your article, use google's keyword planner. Enter your url and hit get ideas. Not exact science but very helpful.
