Hey.. I have been arguing with myself for a while. So I made a meme:

Google will only rank relevant content, and if the links are not relevant to anyone, then why the hell would Google rank your site?

But what is relevancy and is usefulness different to relevancy?

So if I have a website about chocolate cake, and I just talk about chocolate cake a lot, that is relevant, but is that useful? Maybe, maybe not. It's only useful if people link back to it right? And when people link back to it, Google see's that as more important, ranking it higher... So does that mean more links = better ranks? Well we know thats not the case.
So lets imagine what sort of links they would be creating... Probably ones that you or I can't create with software.. Also probably sites with lots of traffic, and maybe that traffic comes from Google, which means.... (keep following).. the linking site is ranking for comparable keywords in Google. So... my theory is:

Google ranks USEFUL sites higher and Google only uses one metric for usefulness - its own. If your backlinks rank for relevant keywords, then your website is USEFUL!

    What are your thoughts?

But of course, it has to be relevant to SOMEONE.. not what you think is relevant.

Google ranks most sites based on relevancy of there backlinks.

However, its not always the case.

For example, YouTube (Google's own property), you can rank a video with zero relevant links if you have enough of them. Ask anyone ranking them with Ser for example.

High authority and relevancy links will work better than a ton of none relevant links in 90% of SEO situations. But to lay a blanket statement that relevant links are what get you ranked is not completely true.

Of course saying non-relevant links won't rank your website/property is not entirely true.. but my point is, Google knows more than we think, and anyone who thinks otherwise is naive. Now, Google obviously knows where every page is ranked, in every keyword people search.. and also every backlink any given page has, and where from.. Therefore.. Google can guess how much traffic any page has in its index... And Google could easily calculate the link velocity and where those backlinks are created... Google can (does) also differentiate what type of links they are... So therefore, Google can see if your website has been linked to by other websites which are already highly ranked, making those links MUCH more valuable.

My evidence comes from analysing thousands (millions?) of keywords and looking at their backlink profiles.. I saw some webites had very powerful backlink profiles but were beaten by other websites with very little backlinking... One correlation I found is that the backlinks from the higher ranking site had links that were also ranking from related keywords. So in those cases my theory stands.

This statement is correct indeed, links from relevant, existing and high PR domains are the most powerful and the best type of links to get in SEO without a doubt, been like that for years!

Two great examples of high pr links are:
    - Contextual Private Blog Network Posts (goal should be to attain homepage posts as that is where the PR is)

    - Home-page Footer / Sidebar Links (monthly rented and usually bought through networks like Sape, etc)

So yes, surely aim for diverse and mixed contextual link-building on high PR sites with a steady and consistent link building velocity and you should be good to go.

Have a great day ahead and rank on!

Ardley, I'm in the process of running a similar test. Building a new site, setting up 10 web 2.0s (I could set up a separate high authority blog network for it but I want to go with what is available for everyone to use) with a lot of content, ranking those web 2.0s in top 100 for the money keyword and seeing how that affects my rankings.

i tried once ranking 3 sites in top 10 for the same keyword , then linked all them to a new site(did no other link building for the new site) . after a month and couple of days the new site was in top 5 ranking higher then the sites i had in top ten which are aged domain + had good link profile (great relevant niche guest posting) , its been about 5 months all 4 of the sites are in top 10 for the keyword . the new site is bringing 70% of the revenue because its ranking 2nd .. so yeah i agree with OP regarding relevancy

Whatever algorithm updates, backlinks are always needed to rank a webpage or website. To search high quality backlinks from authority sites mainly relevant sites for backlinking toward a webpage or website.

    Think about quality over quantity.
