I'm creating a server for a game and I wanted to know, with SEO and all aside [ranking doesn't matter at all, it's not an affiliate site or anything], are there any disadvantages of .info domains?

The reason I ask is because I'm just wanting to setup a quick server and very few will prolly ever visit the site [which will just tell them how to connect to the server anyway] and the .info domain is a lot cheaper.

Thank you all ahead of time for your answers!

I think most people tend to see .info as kind of a spammy domain. Personally I avoid going to .info sites, but I don't speak for everyone. Since you're telling them to go to that site though I don't really see any problems other than that

Didn't expect a reply so fast ha ha! Thank you very much!

Only people who know nothing about SEO can't rank a .info
People don't see the domain as spammy if it is an information site,
they see the webmaster as a spammer which in turn devalues the site.
I've outranked many.com with .info.
What you have is people who are no good at SEO don't make any money therefore
buy cheap domains and use them incorrectly, then they blame the domain for their own
lack of skill and chat bollock about it on forums which newbies then believe and further this myth.

The only disadvantages are your traffic's view on your site since .com's are the norm and the chance that a competitior could grab the .com and start siphoning your traffic due to disadvantage #1

SEO is irrelevant as far as .infos go and anyone who argues against that probably built a crappy site with a high bounce rate to begin with.

HTH :plane:

Edit: Just saw Oxonbeefs post and he basically nailed it for you

There is just the perception that theyre cheap, so they make you look cheap.

o really?
so you are saying that regular user knows how much domains cost

@op

before all this pandas i had .info domain with 200k+ visitors from google, so i don't think that .info domain is disadvantage

Before I knew anything about SEO or IM I always thought .info domains were cheesy cheap knockoffs of .coms. I still visited them occasionally, but in the back of my mind I always felt like they weren't "real" sites.

I'm aware that my preconceived notions weren't correct but in IM perception does matter.

I have a .info for a 30K local and 120k exact match search kw ranking #4 and gets me about $200 p/week with clickbank, it was one of my easier sites to rank to boot. Now if I can only get it to convert better. :)

I've tried asking a few times and was always told .info was bad for EMD's and to only get .com, .net, .org.

i was also curious if .com,.net,.org wasn't available but they were all just parked or nothing on them.. could the .info rank.

so you're saying they are fine for SEO.. does it just need a little extra work then the rest? or what?

try to pick .com at the first place, but there 0 problems with .info as well.

It's just about people's perceptions. Most of us would trust a .com to a .info domain.
