Just wondering if G00gle is still considering directory submission or should we just forget about it?

If it is a good directory, then it is certainly worth it. G00gle removed the suggestion from their list because they claimed that a bunch of shady directory sites popped up, and people were indiscriminately submitting their sites to as many directory sites as they could, which was not what G00gle wanted.

The bottom line, though, is that a do follow link from a well ranked page helps your site. Period. A do follow link from a well ranked page that is considered highly relevant is golden.

So, the bottom line is that one should focus on getting high quality do follow links, and not be so worried about what type of site they are getting the links from.

Is there any directory sites that you actually think are worth paying for?

DMOZ is actually free to suggest a link but good luck getting approved by the editors.

I submited twice to dmoz and got accepted twice within days.. maybe I was lucky. But you can check on wayback to see if the category is active. Some categories have lazy managers and dont update.

as mattstrike mentioned you need RELEVANCE and QUALITY. So if you found directory which has these criterias, you can submit your site there. Whats to much - bad. Try find some quality.

It can be easy AND cheap if you know where to look. I don't know if people offer these services on this forum (they probably do), but TONS of people have dir submission services for dirt cheap on DP - I'm talking like $3 for 200 directories.
