I have a new WP blog, around 3 weeks old.

Bought scrapebox, and blasted around 2k backlinks.
Bought AMR, and blasted around 1.5k directories.
Both contains links directly to my blog.

Things seem to be working out for me, in terms of ranking (from top of page 2 to bottom of page 1 etc.).

I noticed that i am not really following what most of you guys are doing, building a link pyramid (or at least not blasting directly to main site), but am I on the right track now at the very least?

Whats the benefits of blasting a web2.0 properties when they are nofollow at the first place? I dont really understand this?

For example, whats the benefits of putting your site URL on your youtube video description knowing they dont follow?

Sorry for the noob question. Please advise.

There is no right or wrong answer to that question. Yes, building link pyramids are considered to be the safer, more "covering all angles" approach, but blasting a few thousand backlinks with SB or others is not bad either. Make sure you invest in some pyramids once your site is in a decent position, or you have some money to spend.
